What was the highlight of Italia 90 for the then Ireland kitman Charlie O’Leary? Meeting Pope John Paul II. 102-year-old Charlie recalls how Jack Charlton ensured he had a perfect view of the pontiff, and at one point the pope leant in and spoke to Charlie. “I don’t remember anything he said. I was mesmerised,” he says.

I find it quite chilling that these young men were happy to casually kill a man, and film it, at 4 in the afternoon in a relatively built-up area. They really didn't appear to care...

Welcome home to the men and women of the 127th Infantry Battalion after a demanding deployment in South Lebanon. Ireland remains deeply grateful for your courage and service. A heartfelt thank you also to their families, whose strength and support made this service possible.
On Thursday, 15 MAY 26, the first chalk of the 127th Infantry Battalion arrived home following a challenging and demanding deployment with UNIFIL in South Lebanon. Throughout their deployment, personnel of the 127th Infantry Battalion operated in a complex and volatile environment, displaying professionalism, resilience and courage while representing Ireland and Óglaigh na hÉireann with distinction. #ÓglaighnahÉireann #DefendOurState

I thank Ireland for notifying @coe of its willingness to join the Enlarged Partial Agreement enabling the Special Tribunal. This is a logical step given Ireland’s consistent and principled support of all accountability efforts. I am grateful to @HMcEntee for this strong stance. The Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression Against Ukraine will make history: it will hold the highest political and military leadership of the aggressor and its accomplices to account. I urge all states — both in Europe and beyond — to join this historic effort. Justice for the crime of aggression against Ukraine is essential for a lasting peace in Europe.

SEN. ANGUS KING (@SenAngusKing): Europe is providing 99% of the aid to Ukraine in 2026. And Russia has also become a major beneficiary of the war in Iran, gaining $40–$80 billion in additional oil revenue and relief from sanctions “This indicates what's happened to our support for Ukraine over a period of years. The orange bars are US support. The blue bars are Europe. As you see, Europe is 99% in the year 2026. Same thing with humanitarian and other aid to Ukraine. And yet this is I believe, an existential struggle for the future of democracy, where we had an aggressive country invade a neighboring country without any justification whatsoever. And by the way, that invading country is the major winner so far of the war in Iran. They’ve gotten, the estimates are $40 to $80 billion of additional revenues from oil and the relief of sanctions as a result of the war in Iran” - Sen. Angus King (I-ME)

I’m astounded that @KemiBadenoch used footage of soldiers in Derry during Bloody Sunday in this video promoting the actions of the British Army. It’s disgusting, deeply offensive and an insult to the innocent civil rights protestors who soldiers killed that day.

A big day for Dublin GAA earlier, as we turned the first sod at the new Dublin GAA Centre of Participation at Hollystown 💙 The centre is expected to take between 18-24 months to build and when complete will have three full sized, floodlit, sand-based grass pitches, a fourth floodlit synthetic pitch, an indoor training centre, a skills wall, a gym, sensory spaces and changing rooms. Dublin County Board Chairman Ken O’Sullivan hosted Minister for Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Services, Reform and Digitalisation Jack Chambers TD for the official ceremony this afternoon.

The value of goods exported from Ireland has grown dramatically from only €11 billion in 1984 to €224 billion in 2024 - that's an incredible twenty-fold increase. Our trade balance has risen from zero to a €89bn surplus. Wow. 🇮🇪📈 cso.ie/en/releasesandpublica…

Not one single protestor was hurt over 5 days. Not a scratch. Not one. The Army - unlike in the US - was not deployed. A few army heavy vehicle tow trucks were on standby to open up access to an oil refinery.
To the Irish government, this looked like an insurrection—requiring the deployment of the military Sad
