Dear Educators: You were the highlight of a child’s story at the dinner table last week. You are the reason someone can’t wait to get to school today. I know you’re June-tired. Thank you for continuing to show up. Thank you for being who our kids need. #OntEd

ALT Thank you teachers

According to PISA 2018, Ontario has the most financially literate young people on Earth! Pressing economic challenges (cost of living, housing, identity theft) aren’t fixed by individuals being financially literate, but I worry that a fin lit grad requirement sends that message.

If you want to hear my two cents about the financial literacy graduation requirement (spoiler: there’s probably a better concept to choose than that), here’s the interview I was part of today on the radio waves: cbc.ca/listen/live-radio/1-3…

Her short stories inspired me in grade 9, showing me the power of representation. How many others never see themselves in the literature they encounter in school? Alice Munro broke ground as a woman in the 70’s. Let’s support our Canadian writers who are doing the same now.
Very sorry to hear that very old friend and fellow writer #AliceMunro has died. It would have been her 93rd birthday in July. Many memories, for over 45 years...

Dissertations typically aren't graded; either they're acceptable or they're not. So @pdculbert_UBC wonders why we're so sure it makes sense to persist in grading what students do before that point: is.gd/5b41P7

If we’re going to talk about banning things that distract students, often to the detriment of their learning, while simultaneously harming their mental health, maybe we should contemplate grades as much as cell phones. 🤔 #OntEd cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/t…

Stamped from the Beginning premieres today on @netflix around the world. This morning, I watched the documentary for this first time with my parents, my brother, my partner, and our daughters. What a surreal experience, watching them view and interact with the film. 1/3

"If the test is so hard that most students cannot pass it, then a) they have not been taught very well, b) the test is poorly designed, or c) all of the above. Instructors who design exams like this often do so to create an illusion of rigor." @joshua_r_eyler
📣 NEW POST!!! @joshua_r_eyler shares an excerpt from his forthcoming book about grades that deals with one of the biggest perpetrators of both competition and inequity in our schools today: grading curves. @tg2chat teachersgoinggradeless.com/b…

As a sequel to this previous tweet I’d like to add that a focus on marks results in intellectual and creative risk aversion, which also hinders learning. The mindset becomes, “if I make a mistake or do something wrong, I’ll lose marks” instead of, “l’ll learn something from it”.
The only reason why we ever have to worry about students cheating is because the system makes grades and test scores matter a lot more than actually learning anything.

My classroom in this pic. What are the outcomes when students work alone, independently and quietly on mathematics for a full semester? What are the outcomes when they never collaborate? What are the outcomes when they always mimic and never think?
Other than novelty, why would students working on giant vertical whiteboards increase learning? @pgliljedahl spends a great deal of time on engagement and thinking, but not on outcomes.
