SPRING BALL RECAP - MT. RIDGE
I first want to thank coach Nick Robins for trusting me to help their players get seen and allowing me to come by for practice. I have a ton of respect for the coaches in our communities that maximize opportunities for their players.
HERE IS WHAT I SAW:
I loved the way practice was structured, there was a competitive team session to start and it set the tone for the rest of the session. Once again the organization was great, a common theme this far in my spring visits. Coach Robins is a unique and innovative offensive mind, and he does some things that not many other teams do. Is not a surprise that his squad was very explosive last season. That being said, his defense played really well all evening and had the upper hand on the night. I was impressed with tempo and level of schematic understanding for a spring session - the entire group was able to play fast and didn’t make a lot of mental errors. I foresee Mt. Ridge being one of the top teams in 6A and I’m excited about the development that will take place between now and week 1.
WHO STOOD OUT?
Jaxon Hunt, QB - 2027
@JaxonHunt111
The returning 6A leader in passing will look to have a standout shot campaign. He was in command of the group and was sharp in each period. He’s continuing to progress into a college prospect. I feel that Jaxon is arguably the smartest QB in the class which is a quality that pops on tape. It will be good to see him double down on what was a remarkable year last season, and remind people that he can throw it with anyone.
Tytan DeJong, LB/ WR - 2027
@Tytan_Dejong08
It’s not hard to see why Tytan is a top prospect in the West. The BYU commit has the physicality and athleticism that screams next level. He moves extremely well at LB which is not a surprise given his ability at receiver. It will be hard to take Tytan off of the field at all next year as he’s likely the best player on either side. I am eager to see how he is utilized and anticipate a massive year statistically.
Mason Tavita, OL - 2029
Mason has all of the tools to be a college prospect, he is one of the few 2029’s that stand out to me in our state currently. Great size, good athleticism and moves well. He will be a big piece for the team this season. College coaches need to keep tabs on him the next few years. His development has been notable.
There were several additional guys who stood out including Shane Johnson (OL 2027), McKrae Renteria (WR 2029), Kyler Christiansen (LB 2027), Xander Thayer (ATH 2027), Jordan Claassen (WR 2028).
The strengths of this squad, outside of the quarterback, will be the line backing core, the offensive line unit and the receiver group. A lot of talent spread around which should bode well for the goals of that program. It can’t be understated how impressive the turnaround has been for coach Robins and the Sentinel program. They went from relatively unknown, to a destination school for transfers in one season. As long as they keep momentum going in the right direction, they will be a contender every year. I appreciate the opportunity to be there, thanks for the time fellas!
