Yesterday I was honored to receive the Gold Medal for Outstanding Contribution to Public Discourse from
@TheHist of Trinity College, the oldest student society. The recognition belongs to the human rights defenders who I have the privilege to work with over last 35 years. It serves as an acknowledgement of the importance of human rights issues in China. Past recipients include Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Patti Smith, Margaret Atwood, President Michael D. Higgins.
The event was attended by about 50 students and faculty on the first day of new school year. They asked many insightful and timely questions, making the experience even more meaningful. I appreciated the opportunity to share my life experiences, from Tiananmen Square to present day.I was especially encouraged by a few Chinese students who listened attentively.
