🌟 Closing Out Day 1 🌟
The final presentations of Day 1 at the 2026 Mental Wellness Symposium left attendees with powerful messages of resilience, leadership, and hope.
🔥 Kimberly Lightley shared “Expectation, Action, Impact: Let Us Navigate Together,” drawing from her experience as a survivor of the 1994 South Canyon Fire on Storm King Mountain. Her presentation highlighted the importance of teamwork, perseverance, and transforming tragedy into meaningful action.
🚒 Chief John Oates presented “Moral Injury in the Fire Service,” exploring how experiences that conflict with our deeply held values can impact firefighters and how leaders play a critical role in both contributing to and helping resolve these challenges.
Two impactful presentations that sparked meaningful reflection and discussion as we wrapped up an outstanding first day.

What Firefighters Want in 2026 is live, and this year, it's all about training.
@FireRescue1 has launched its annual survey with a focused mission: understanding how firefighters train, whether that training is realistic and relevant, and how leadership supports it.
If you are currently active with a fire service agency in the United States or Canada, whether career, volunteer, combination, or county/state/federal, your perspective matters. All ranks are encouraged to participate, from firefighter to fire chief.
📊 DID YOU KNOW? Cardiovascular disease causes 45% of LODDs among firefighters.
Heart attacks during or shortly after fire suppression operations are the leading cause. This month: screening matters, and so does documenting exposures with #ExposureTracker. i-psdi.org/exposure
#FFCAM 🚨 The 7 Critical Contamination Points Every #Firefighter Faces
Cancer prevention starts with knowing WHERE you're getting exposed:
1️⃣ EN ROUTE: Diesel exhaust off-gassing gear in the cab
2️⃣ FIRE ATTACK: Incomplete SCBA use 🧵
7️⃣ STATION RETURN: Not showering immediately, gear in living quarters
⚠️ THE REALITY: Most focus on #2 and ignore the rest. Cancer doesn't care where the exposure happened.
💡 THIS WEEK: Identify which points your department handles well and which need work. Pick ONE to improve.
Prevention isn't glamorous. But it works. 🧡
