Because it’s important for women to have a word that means female humans so that we can be protected in law and policy. We are biologically different from men, and we have different needs. If there is no word for us, then there is no way to address these needs, or to create laws which protect our rights. I think you need to ask yourself why it matters so much to you that there should be no words that mean “female human beings.” When you take our words, you silence us – and I think that’s your goal.

Seriously, it was the ultimate soul-filling experience. I loved catching up with old friends, making new ones, and meeting so many of you who are out here doing the real work on the ground. Erika did an incredible job producing the event, and we spent time together strategizing how we will build on this energy to reach and empower even more young women. Leaving that conference, I am more convinced than ever that the culture is shifting and women are rising. Seeing so many young leaders completely unapologetic gives me so much hope for the future.
