I’m constantly surprised when start-up founders ask me at what point should they hire their first designer.
My answer is usually some variation of, “if you were designing your own house, when would you hire an architect”?

After interviewing our researchers we created 4 pillars to focus our efforts on for research storage :
1. Accessible - Research needs to be findable and accessible
2. Onboarding - Researchers need to have a succinct induction
ALT Picture of a poster:
Research needs to be findable and accessible
• Everyone can access previous research when needed
• People know the locations of insights and relevant research
• Folders are consistently labelled across products
• Researchers own the structure they store their research within their product team
ALT Picture of a poster:
Researchers need to have a succinct induction
• We need to know why our product is in its current form so we don’t repeat work
• We need to understand the constraints of the product to add value
• Standardised documents enables us to start quicker
Linear roadmaps are misleading without a crystal ball for seeing the future. A roadmap that recognizes the existence of risk as time goes on is more honest. But an effective PM needs to anticipate possible branches, too - and create clear criteria for following each path.
ALT Three roadmaps:
Misleading roadmap (linear) - “We will follow this linear path from zero to our inevitable victory, and these are the milestones that will get us there.”
Honest roadmap (conical) - “We know where we are today, and have a good idea about the near future, but recognize that the future becomes uncertain.”
Strategic roadmap (diverging paths) - “We know where we are today, and anticipate decision points that will change our path. We are intentionally gathering the data that will help us make those decisions.”
Accessibility should be apart of every design teams core beliefs, values, and principles — not an afterthought. Design with accessibility in mind all the time.
What online design resources like courses, digital goods or online books would you recommend to early stage designers?
I'm about to reach 10K subs(!) on YouTube and would like to do a giveaway (don't wanna bother with shipping physical goods) for my subscribers to celebrate 🎉
