Earlier today I decided to do a super unofficial test to see which PKM apps start up the fastest. I use my PKM apps on mobile a lot and wanted to get a feel for where each of the big ones were. The apps I tested were:
-
@rem_note
-
@reflectnotes
-
@obsdmd
-
@RoamResearch
-
@craftdocs
I was going to test
@logseq, but their sync is still in early beta and it wouldn't really be fair to test them against these apps.
Here's how I ran my test:
- I started up each mobile app to make sure that there wasn't any extraneous notes to sync or any ReadWise content to sync.
- After that I force closed each app to make sure it would start up fresh.
- I then went to the desktop version of the app and pasted in 5 paragraphs of Lorum Ipsum text to the Daily Note and waited for it to do any syncing it needed to do.
- I then recorded my screen on my iPhone as I tapped on each app and waited for the text to show up.
- I took that recording and airdropped it to my Mac (new 15" MacBook Air M2)
- I trimmed each video in iMovie from when I tapped on the icon to when the text showed up and recorded the time.
- After seeing the results I did this several more times to make sure they were consistent each time and that the times weren't an aberration.
This is super unofficial I know, but I feel like it gives me a good idea at least of how each app performs. Each app would consistently produce about the same time so the times you see are what I would consistently get with each app.
My initial guesses on how it would shake out was pretty close, but there was one app that shocked me with their startup time: RemNote.
I can categorize the results as: Near Instant and Just OK.
The Just OK apps took twice as long as the Near Instant apps.
The Near Instant apps were:
-
@craftdocs
-
@rem_note
-
@reflectnotes
These apps were all consistently instantaneous and you don't actually seem to "feel" them loading, if that makes sense. The notes just seem to be waiting for you when you open the app.
RemNote was the surprise. I knew that their sync had gotten better, but I didn't know it would be in the same league as Craft and Reflect.
Craft was no surprise and Reflect the same. I've used them enough to know how great they are and how native they feel.
The second level is Just OK. This was:
-
@obsdmd
-
@RoamResearch
These apps performed about the same, consistently. You can actually "feel" them loading. It's not horrible by any stretch, but it's not even close to the Near Instant level. You see either a loading bar or an astrolabe while you wait for them to load. I would also say that they are "Good Enough", but when you use them and then use the Near Instant apps...there's a considerable difference.
Keep in mind that this isn't the measure of these apps. There are tons of different features to measure these apps by. But this is a big one for me. I use mobile a lot and speed is important when you have a thought you want to get down or you want to pull up a note you just made on the desktop version of the app.
Thanks for reading!
