As the global incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) continues to rise, innovative strategies for early identification, prevention, and treatment are urgently needed. The PROMISE (PRediction and PRevention through Omics, Microbiome, Immune System, and Environment) Consortium, is a collaborative initiative led by @IcahnMountSinai, @SinaiHealth, and @MassGeneralNews. Supported by Helmsley, PROMISE aims to advance prediction, prevention, and improved outcomes for individuals at risk of developing IBD. Recently, PROMISE convened an international group of multidisciplinary experts, patient advocates, and individuals with IBD to create a roadmap toward prevention–focused strategies and interventions. The group also engaged with Dr. Carla Greenbaum, a leading expert in type 1 diabetes prevention, to explore cross-disease learnings. Their roadmap has now been published in Gastroenterology—marking an important step toward a future where IBD can be predicted and prevented. Innovative research is essential for enhancing our understanding of Crohn’s disease and advancing the development of future preventative therapies. Helmsley supported the Genetic, Environmental, Microbial (GEM) Project , which aimed to predict an individual’s risk of developing Crohn’s disease, identify methods to prevent the disease before symptoms arise, and develop new treatments for those already affected. Recent studies from the GEM Project highlight the connection between environmental factors and healthy individuals with a family history of the condition.
