At the #GaryCon artist's booth I learned that Larry Elmore was willing to do the covers of the new Dragonlance trilogy but was told that they wanted a digital artist because digital art has more "pop." So instead of a cover like the one on the left we got the one on the right.

5e is the perfect engine for gothic horror now that vampires can *checks notes* grapple without a saving throw.

D&D's new character sheet fell into a common trap. Grouping skills by ability is bad design. It's easier to find information searching 1 box, not 5. New players don't know what skill matches what ability. You know what they do know? The alphabet. Sort skills by alpha. #dnd

Secondarily, swapping skills with different ability scores is one of the easiest ways to add some variety to D&D's system, but this already-underemployed tactic is trampled by the new character sheet pairing them together. Doesn't make it impossible, just more confusing.

Now that this has gotten some attention, I can reveal my devious plan to promote my own character sheet:

Another victory for the environment! The Florida Supreme Court has denied the appeal of developers who had their project to build 550 homes on the abandoned Calusa golf course challenged by the presence of a rookery. They now have to start from scratch with a new proposal!

This post covers a lot of ground: Symmetrical rules, players making all the rolls, contests and their math, and stealth and ambushes. Yet somehow it turned out short. Usually, my topics grow in length. dmdavid.com/tag/never-have-m…

Come to #Chult, they said. It’s a tropical wonderland, they said. Well, today’s Side Trek from #TheEpicAtlas may have awesome #DnD maps for running Tomb of Annihilation or a homebrew campaign in The Forgotten Realms, but I’d like to have a “talk” with my travel agent! #ttrpg

Eureka! I found a treasure trove of misplaced and forgotten master copies of my 3.5 & 4E #DnD #maps last night. Layered hi-res Photoshop files going back to the first few #ttrpg projects I ever worked on. Gridless and spoiler-free player’s versions coming soon!

Imagine if Thomas Huxley came out years after publishing an article in the Westminster Review assigning Darwin's eponym to biological evolution, and told us all we should start calling it "Huxleyism." He would have been pilloried, and rightfully so.

Fear that if they do anything else, they lose their audience. Well, in that case, it wasn't your audience in the first place, it was Hasbro's. You should make 5E products because you love 5E and you have a vision. Not because you're afraid you'll lose customers otherwise.

Ben Riggs caused a stir this week when he pronounced "The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead." Some part of the scene certainly feels like it's died in the last couple of years. So maybe it's time for a Fifth Edition Revival (5ER)? #dnd #5er #DnDRevival mtblackgames.com/blog/the-fi…

What WotC's current execs may not realize is that art is the only thing setting their products apart in recent history. The more they lean on AI art, the less reason their consumers have to care about their product. Game quality is better from many smaller shops.

This is not a sleight to D&D/MtG's designers, many of whom are great. It's a result of their company's unwillingness to fairly compensate/retain good talent and reliance on farming out work to independent contractors with little guidance or experience.
