I recently passed a milestone number of golf courses played: 700 in my life so far. So I updated my all-time top 10 and broke it down a couple of other ways for @GOLFPASS golfpass.com/travel-advisor/…

COPAKE COUNTRY CLUB Craryville, N.Y. Devereux Emmet, 1921 $65 An ingenious routing over heaving topography results in more half-par holes than just about anywhere I’ve ever been, with all sorts of ground-game possibilities on excellent, unirrigated fairways. An Old World gem!

Okay, if he wins his first PGA Tour event a week after I practically picked his name at random for this tweet, Jackson Suber needs to create his own logo/sigil.
Stylized initials are so passé. Need professional golfers developing full-on crests and sigils. I want to know what bird or tree Jackson Suber feels best represents him.

Interesting discussion on F1 broadcast about how the cars need to be periodically slowed down so that they can continue to fit the iconic tracks they race on. Are you listening, golf?

Everyone: Playing the PGA Tour is hard. Ben James [rollerskating backwards]: Actually it's not that hard.

WAHCONAH COUNTRY CLUB Dalton, Mass. Wayne Stiles; Geoffrey Cornish 1930; 1959 $120 Course #715 The site of Bobby Jones’ final round is pleasant and friendly w/nines built 29 years apart from original plans. The midcentury back nine has its moments but the front is the star here.

At bottom, a copy of the Jones letter, from August 15, 1948. “This was my last effort. Sorry it wasn’t a better one.” A fascinating little trinket of golf history, albeit a somber one.

WYNDHURST GOLF & CLUB Lenox, Mass. Stiles & Van Kleek, 1926 $135 Big investment in the onsite Miraval resort has trickled down to the course, where Mark Mungeam has mellowed some greens and is adjusting bunkers to positive effect. Enough genuine quirk still remains, happily.

Re: “Horses for courses”— Imagine that every elite golfer has a course or two that they practically own - that just makes so much sense to them that they play great every time they tee it up there. Now consider that for some players, that course is Augusta National or another major championship or elite venue. And for some other players, that course is a perennial U.S. Open qualifying site, a KFT course or something a Q-School second-stage site. What a random bit of great luck for some players, and less great luck for others.
Nick Hardy: 2015- qualifed for the US Open in Springfield 2016-qualified for the US Open in Springfield 2019-qualified for the US Open in Springfield 2022-qualified for the US Open in Springfield 2023-qualified for the US Open in Springfield 2026- you guessed it.

Now a decade out from its transformation, Hartford’s Keney Park Golf Course has matured beautifully and is playing really nicely. I’ll even (mostly) excuse this afternoon’s sluggish pace of play because it is one of America’s greatest munis. An absolute must-play in New England.

A new one for me: Breeze Airways flight from Vero Beach up to Hartford is delayed on the ground because the cargo net inside the plane is malfunctioning, so the bags have to be moved from the rear of the cargo hold to the front. Pray for my travel case.

Stanley Robinson.
Michael, Muhammad, Usain, Bo, Pele, Wayne and Tiger aren’t available. Name the most electrifying athlete you’ve ever seen.

This is more appealing to me than yet another huge, amorphous blob putting course.
Is this the world’s best putting green? Little Ashton GC in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

At $150 a pop, would golf courses save money if they bought a bunch and made sure every foursome went out with one? Or posted one up near every green?
