We think the Polecam shows promise but larger field tests in different sites with known polecat occurrence would be good to see if a larger effort can increase precision in the estimates. As we observed multiple species, it could also be used to look at species interactions. 6/7
As all EU member states need to report the status of their polecat population as one of the species on the Annex V of the EU Council’s Directive on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora, we hope this method will be picked up in other countries 7/7
Have you ever though how your personal decision of place a #cameratrap in one tree or another determine the number of animals recorded?
What about to rotate the cameras to new locations during the study to increase the number of sampling points?
