On April 4, 1949, the North Atlantic Treaty was signed in Washington, uniting the United States, Canada, and 10 European nations in a historic commitment to collective defense and peace. Then, and now, it stands as a powerful example of what strong alliances can achieve. 77 years later, emerging rhetoric from Washington risks undermining the very coalitions that helped secure Allied victory after WWII. Now, as global tensions mount, the United States must remain a steadfast partner to its European allies and its commitment to peace. I look forward to 77 more years of transatlantic partnership.
