What’s it like for a normal hack golfer to play Augusta National? 2 years ago I got the unbelievable honor of playing the home of the Masters with a member. I still pinch myself. So what did I shoot? Let me take you on a hole by hole journey from the member tees:

I’ve been blessed to play so many great places. This just might be my favorite. Some places in golf are spiritual, North Berwick is one of them. A place where golf was meant to be. There may be better golf courses. But very few, if any, places I’d rather play golf.

Cart riders in America always tell me how slow walking golf is. I’ve played 13 walking rounds in the last 10 days in the Netherlands and Scotland. Longest round: 4:10. That’s the only round that was over 4 hours. Most closer to 3:30. Modern American golf is slow by design and exacerbated by bad policy, selfish players, and poor course layout.
Playing at Wild Rock in the Dells...absolute death march! 4:50 Goal time is insane!Waiting so long the group in front of us is now playing as a 8 some and us a 7 some...and we are STILL waiting.

The blame isn’t all on players, many courses are design to sell houses, not to play golf. Throw in 8 minute tee time spacing and you have a mess.

Renaissance Club Tom Doak - 2008 #27 in Scotland Private One of the few truly private courses in Scotland, Renaissance is well known as the host of the Scottish Open. But this place is so much more. Let’s talk turf. Renaissance has probably the best bouncy turf in Scotland, even though many will not accept that it’s a links course. It’s so firm and fast, the ball bounces all over. The greens are impeccable. True, it doesn’t play quite like the old links. Thanks to its budget and irrigation, it’s more refined and the greens just have a modern look. But make no mistake, you play proper links golf here. The course starts on farm land and looks benign at first glance. But thanks to Tom’s excellent design and the firm fast turf, it’s always super fun and challenging. The greens are full of contour, way more than most Scotland greens. It flows out to the ocean on new land it acquired from Muirfield. These holes are stunning and also just great golf holes. The cape hole on the ocean will be remember by all, though the gorgeous hole before the water holes steals the show for me. It’s a modern private club with mostly international members. There is fantastic lodging on-site and fantastic amenities. This is where it really differs with the local clubs. There is even a nice grass driving range! A rarity in Scotland. I love Renaissance Club, it’s a blast to play and it’s nice to have the amenities and the great conditions as a nice break from the old school links. The halfway house is legendary, overlooking the ocean and serving meat pies that are devoured. If you can secure an invite, get to Renaissance!

A sad day. Phil’s legacy has taken a huge hit over the years and now is at rock bottom. Tiger was able to come back from controversy, but he was younger. And this is different. Non-consensual physical contact is something that won’t be forgiven easily if at all. Dammit. Some of our golf heroes just aren’t good people and that sucks.
Exclusive: Phil Mickelson is no longer a member at The Farms Golf Club outside San Diego after a female club employee accused the six-time major champion of inappropriate contact with her before a round of golf earlier this spring. Full story: glfdig.st/aPte50ZaAPJ

Crail Golfing Society - Craighead Gil Hanse - 1993 Private - limited public tee times 125 Pounds / $170 USD Craighead is one of those places that comes out of nowhere. It’s not highly ranked and not as well known as its neighbors. Yet it’s as charming as the old links. I love this place. One of Gil’s earliest designs, he did a masterful job of using old farmland to make a linksy golf course that is truly unique. The coolest feature, other than the gorgeous ocean views, are the incredible stone walls…some likely predate the birth of Jesus. They are not just visual, they play an active role in the course strategy. Turns out defending against the Vikings adds some great golf course flair. The course ebbs and flows to and from the sea. It’s a windy site, always expect the breeze since it sits high over the sea. The ocean views are spectacular and a constant feature. The greens are a great challenge. They are mid sized and have lots of internal contour. The par 3’s are very hard, mostly on the longer side. This course is no pushover. Why doesn’t Craighead get more attention? It suffers from its opening. The course when built was far too hard and the fairways too narrow, the members said it just wasn’t fun. As it matured it got tweaked and now it’s an absolute blast to play, while still a challenge. I absolutely love this course. If on a St. Andrews trip, add Crail!!!

This is the kind of place that I just love. Quirk and uniqueness just makes an experience so much more fun.

The best stretch of land in golf? Sure maybe you think of 17 mile drive. It’s hard to top Pebble, MPCC, and Cypress Point. Gullane stands up strong! 3 Gullane courses, Muirfield, Luffness, Kilspindie. Truly magical. 😍

We show a lot of the land. The dirt. The equipment. The construction progress. And that’s because watching something get built from nothing is genuinely exciting to us and for all our future guests to see. But over the next few weeks, I want to start highlighting the people actually making this thing happen. Because Candyroot doesn’t exist without them. First up: Carson Shaw. Carson is our Golf Course Superintendent and — more importantly — he was our very first full-time hire. A Statesville, NC kid who studied at NC State and went on to work at Quail Hollow — one of the most respected clubs in the country and host of major championships. He could have gone a lot of directions from there but chose to bet on something brand new instead. Right now, during grow-in season, his job is everything. Growing grass on a golf course is both science and patience. You’re managing soil, water, seed, weather, and time — and the margin for error is real. Carson is locked in. But that title also means something different at a startup than it does at an established club. It doesn’t mean you clock in, do your job, and go home. It means you show up every day to a place that doesn’t fully exist yet, figure out what needs to get done, and do it — whether it’s in your job description or not. For Carson, that’s meant leading media walkthroughs, being present for investor visits, handling the hundred small things that don’t have an owner yet, and he’s doing all of it with an attitude and work ethic that sets the tone for everyone who comes after him. This is what building looks like. Dirt and equipment, yes. But mostly people like Carson. 🌱

It’s the middle of June! Imagine coming up 18 on the Old Course and playing through a snow storm. That’s just what happened yesterday. Feel awful for the guys who lost their round. But for the ones who finished liked this, what a memory!

Made the drive over to North Berwick last night from Edinburgh to have dinner with @Top100Rick and Twitterless Zach. Had to wait for them to finish their 36 hole day at Muirfield and watched the storm that hit St Andrews/Fyfe roll over the firth right towards us. WOW what a storm

This is insane. I was there in St Andrews 2 days ago golfing in the sun. Today I was just across the water playing golf and it was a wonderful weather day. Yet every golfer in St Andrews had their day ruined. Some lost their Old Course chance!

I adore Scotland. But the weather can chance in a second and sometimes rounds get ruined. You have to accept that.

I challenge you to find another 2 foot putt anywhere that takes 20 seconds to get to the hole. The famous 15th hole on Gullane No 3 provides an endless amount of options. All smart? No. All fun? Yes. One of the most fun holes on the planet!

The greens at Gullane 3 are minty! Place is such a gem.

This was wacky. On 18 my buddy had a 5 footer for birdie. As he sets up, his Taylor Made Spyder putter head just falls off. Straight clean break. Didn’t put any weight on it or do anything weird. He’s not a club banger type of guy. I’ve never seen a putter break before without a violent action.
