“Buyers have woken up that leasehold is a toxic scam. These freeholders and managing agents have a direct line to your bank account.”

@Keir_Starmer come on....
The government has treated desperate leaseholders like mugs.
The Prime Minister will have to take this housing emergency seriously.
Ending leasehold was promised in the manifesto.

Message to the NEETs from a young Millennial: when you get your foot on the property ladder, a lifetime of financial servitude as a leaseholder awaits.
Leasehold is a toxic scam 👇
That direct link to the bank account is the worst feeling. At any point, as they wish, they can increase (and never decrease) service charges. This is against the background of Labour rinsing the population with taxes. Leaseholders are getting screwed from all directions.

Starmer’s successor has a tiny window to impress the country.
They inherit a watered-down and discredited Leasehold and Commonhold Reform Bill.
Fix it, and @AndyBurnhamGM@wesstreeting get a popular, low-cost, anti-rentier, pro-growth agenda.
Bond markets will be fine too.
Yes Harry. Any successor needs to have a strategy in place on leasehold that does nothing less than fulfil the manifesto commitment: abolish leasehold. If not, they will share the fate of Keir Starmer - the most unpopular prime minister in history.

Andy Burnham is clearly looking for an easy route into voters’ hearts. Here’s one: Scrap Starmer’s half-hearted Leasehold Reform bill and go for scrapping Leasehold completely. That will be a big ‘Win’ in London and other cities where millions of voting leaseholders live.

When people are desperate, they get angry.
They want politics upended.
That’s what is happening with leaseholders.
The next PM will inherit a popular agenda to cut bills and unleash growth.
But ONLY if they overhaul Starmer’s dud of a Commonhold and Leasehold Reform Bill.
Leasehold is looting people and blocking growth.
@AndyBurnhamGM@wesstreeting, take on middlemen and extortionists.
Reverse @Keir_Starmer’s betrayal of leaseholders.
Overhaul his weak, lobbyist-friendly Bill.
Honour the manifesto. End leasehold for good. We’ll cheer you on.

People in those flats are in desperate situation.
Real estate firms on verge of bankruptcy, developers paused building and can’t sell, lenders refuse o finance homes with more than 1% service charge.
And what does the government doing ?
Stalling in silence!
Shame!

Big thanks to the @LBC news team & Matthew Wright for allowing @HarryScoffin to continue to speak truth to power. In an often desert of media coverage - especially in 🏴- your coverage gives us some comfort as we face huge power imbalance with developers, freeholders & Govts 👏👍
the jam is right where you say — the bottom rung is mostly flats, and a flat's real monthly cost lives in a service charge nobody sees until conveyancing. hard to feed a chain from the bottom when buyers can't even price the bottom rung before they're committed.
I'd argue the leasehold debate is about much more than fairness: it's about unlocking the redevelopment potential of large parts of London to support densification, a new and more diversified group of property developers, economic growth via getting fixed capital to work freely.
We are exposing the story our political and media class would rather keep hidden.
Starmer cannot help himself.
Labour promised to end leasehold for good.
Now he wants to protect money-for-nothing ground rents until 2068.
This is not the change people were promised.
.@Keir_Starmer tinkers with the scam he promised to end.
Leaseholders are trapped in negative equity, unable to remortgage or sell, hit with junk fees called “service charges”.
A financial and human scandal.
Next PM: lobbyists or leaseholders?
