Hello, my name is Robert, I’m an archaeology graduate. I study tornado archaeology, and detecting tornadoes prior to the written record through archaeological methods. I also study how tornadoes have impacted settlement depopulated in the Southeast through the past 800 years.

I’ve seen lots of discourse on “debarking” lately, here’s my two cents: debarking can’t really be used as a reliable DI in most cases. Bark toughness varies wildly by tree species and tree health. I have seen a weak spin up tornado debark an unhealthy oak before.

Some bark peels off a tree fairly easy, other tree’s bark is like glue. Debarking can be somewhat helpful in a larger DoD evaluation, but you need a good bit more for it to be helpful. A debarked tree isn’t always sign of a violent tornado. Lots of factors at play.

A new EF4 damage point was added to Enid. 16-18 DBH tree thrown at least 40 ft. This particular degree of damage was added to the revised EF scale, and since this tree was rated EF4, it could suggest winds up to 180 mph based on the “Single Tree” DI in the revised EF scale.

Drone video reveals extreme forest destruction in Franklin County southeast of Roxie, Mississippi after a significant tornado tore through the area last night. A Tornado Emergency was in effect at the time, and you can see just how intense it was in this area. I estimate the damage path was nearly a mile wide here… @ryanhallyall @WxWiseApp #Missippi #Tornado #SevereWeather

This also is important for claims of tornado alley “moving”. We never really had enough data to define it in the first place.
Reminder we have almost no observed historical timeframes for large tornado outbreaks. We have less than a hundred years of good data. This is almost nothing in terms of a historical record, and even less geologically. For all we know…

we could be in a super outbreak drought. We have no good data for how common these events are. I see ppl talking about events that “will likely never be surpassed”. I think that’s very unlikely. We can understand “1-1000 year floods” because we can see it in floodplains.

There’s nothing like this for tornados. We have no idea what a 1-1000 year tornado outbreak looks like. It might be the 2011 super outbreak. It might be twice as bad. We don’t really know. Tornados outbreaks have probably been happening for billions of years.

We found several points of EF4 damage southeast and southwest of Enid from the tornado last night. Damage surveys still ongoing, but we have found EF4 damage. #okwx

Got some very intense hardwood damage East of Vance AFB near Enid. This is where you have to be careful. This DoD might indicate up to EF5 level winds, however noting the type of hardwood is important. These are American Elms, with Janka around 830. There are harder softwoods.

Btw, photos will be available through DAT at some point. They’re not mine to share and are shared by the NWS. Just giving an update on survey progress.

Will be analyzing Enid damage today from QRT. If any chasers have additional photos of intense tree damage, please send photos.
