As a co-first author, I'm thrilled to share our latest study on understanding the mechanics behind (dis)entanglement of blackworms. I'm truly grateful for the opportunity to contribute to defining the rules of entangled animal collectives! @BhamlaLab

Thrilled to share that our latest research, "Flotation of Aquatic Worms and Other Hyponeuston", is now published on Interface Focus— and we landed the cover art! 🪱
This project was a collaborative dive into how blackworms and other organisms navigate the air-water interface.
Honored our team won the 2025 IEEE ICRA Best Paper in Mechanisms & Design!
The award was given “for using soft robot worm blobs to elucidate entanglement-mediated coordination, providing a novel test bed for studying emergent behavior in active matter systems.” #entangledmatter
🚨 BEST PAPER FINALIST 🚨
Our work on entangled worm blobs is a finalist at #ICRA2025! 🌟
We combined concepts from living worm blobs and soft robotics to study collective behaviors driven by physical entanglement.

Ph.D. graduate @TuazonHarry is looking forward to
helping turn science fiction into reality as Tech’s first Innovation Fellow at @DARPA. His journey from Navy submarine to research lab: b.gatech.edu/3EfwtiR
Thrilled to share that I’m joining the 2025 DARPA Innovation Fellows, becoming the first Georgia Tech PhD to earn this honor! Excited to build on my work in entangled matter & bioengineering, driving high-risk, high-reward ideas with @DARPA "Department of Mad Scientists!"
Excited to share that I passed my PhD defense with flying colors! 🎉 It’s official—Dr. Tuazon here! Huge thanks to everyone who supported me along the way. Onward to new adventures!

I'm excited to share that I'll be defending my PhD dissertation! 🎓 My research dives into “worm blobs”—tangled structures that adapt to changing environments, escape predators, and float together using surface tension ("worm buoy"). Curious? Send a DM for the Zoom link!
Possibly the most metal story I ever reported for @newscientist, about the gruesome way leeches attack blackworms named "spiral entombment" newscientist.com/article/244…

ALT Fig. 1Behavioral difference of California blackworms in two oxygen environments. (A) An individual L. variegatus (California blackworm). (B) A worm blob consisting of 12 individual blackworms. (C) 1 g of blackworms in a 20 mL glass vial at high dissolved oxygen (DO) level (8.3 ± 0.3 mg/L). High DO levels induce stress among blackworms and they create a spherical-shaped structure. The oxygen sensor is affixed on the left side of the container and the temperature sensor is inserted through the cap from above. The vial is filled with distilled water. (D) In 30 min, DO reaches very low levels of 0.9 ± 0.5 mg/L. At this point, tail reaching behavior is pervasive to supplement respiration. (E) Average DO as a function of time. Shaded region corresponds to standard deviation with n= 7 individual trials. (Supplementary Movie S1).
🌊 Dive into our latest research published in @ICB_journal ! See how these freshwater leeches ingeniously use their bodies to entrap fast-escaping blackworms in a spiral embrace. 🌀🐛 Check out our findings and watch the mesmerizing tactics in action! @BhamlaLab
Thank you Andreas Bausch (@BauschLab), @BhamlaLab @AntoineDeblais and Sara Jabbari for bringing together scientists from Active polymers, filaments and robotics background. It was fun week with enriching talks and group works! @lorentzcenter@MicroRobotLab@SantAnnaPisa
Had the great opportunity for being invited to present my experimental work to active polymer physicists in the Netherlands!
I'm glad my worm photography was used for their advertisement poster too 😁
