ALT So, how does it all connect? 1 Bacteria like E. coli live in the gut of the animals and are shed in their poo 2 Hot and wet weather allows bacteria to amplify 3 Rain or water can carry those bacteria from animal areas into nearby fields 4 People eat the contaminated crops like lettuce 5 People get sick with food poisoning
ALT How can we prevent it While this is part of a natural cycle, we work closely with other organisations and industry to share information and find the cause, so we can stop people getting sick. There are simple measures we can all do to stop the spread. Wash your salad Wash fruit and vegetables before eating by rinsing under running water or in a bowl, gently rubbing the surface. Start with the least dirty items and give everything a final rinse. Wash your hands Wash your hands with soap and warm water before preparing, cooking, or eating food. Clean your surfaces Keep surfaces and chopping boards clean, and wash them well after handling raw foods. Use separate utensils where possible, clean cloths regularly, and wash items between tasks to stop harmful bacteria spreading.
