Venetoulis Institute (@BaltimoreBanner) CEO Bob Cohn says decisions on job cuts had *nothing* to do with strike history.
% of strikers cut: 80
% of scabs kept who publicly disavowed the union: 80

The Omaha World-Herald is one of @LeeEntNews' major market news organizations and should treat it like one. The @owhguild deserves a contract with fair compensation now.
Professional journalists shouldn't have to struggle to pay for heat and food, but at @LeeEntNews papers in Wisconsin, that's what's happening. Pls. read this and consider signing their petition.
Congrats to today's Pulitzer winners — not *just* the Guild folks.
FYI: The owners of the @BaltimoreBanner & @PittsburghPG began their PG tenure by canning members of the team that won a Pulitzer for Tree of Life coverage.
Why? They're union officers.

The Venetoulis Institute for Local Journalism has begun its ownership of the @PittsburghPG by cutting at least 40% of staff, and 80% of former strikers.
It is sad, vindictive, and does not bode well for what we’ve fought and hoped for, including the success of the PG.
We are very, very glad that @pittsburghPG is surviving! We’re eager to turn over a new leaf with new owners who value journalism, and respect Pittsburgh.
We’re also concerned by the @VenetoulisInst's stated intent to cut jobs.
ALT "The Post-Gazette newsroom currently stands around 100. The new iteration of the PG going forward might need to start out smaller, Mr. Bainum said.
“The Post-Gazette’s current business model does not support the size of the current newsroom,” he said. “We’re going to have to thoughtfully address that.
“We’re learning as we go, so we certainly don’t have all the answers,” he said."
ALT This image shows a logo of The Washington Post Guild and our statement:
The Post Guild vehemently opposes any more cuts to the staff of The Washington Post. As we’ve seen in recent years, continuing to eliminate scores of workers who make this storied institution what it is only stands to weaken the newspaper, drive away readers and undercut The Post’s mission: to hold power to account without fear or favor and provide critical insight into communities across the region, country and world.
If Jeff Bezos no longer supports that mission, then The Post and its readers deserve a steward who does.
If you value The Post’s journalism and its renowned past — if you care about its future — we ask that you join us in our call to #SaveThePost.
Workers CAN regulate AI with strong contract language. Full stop.
Unionized journalists just proved this at POLITICO. @penguild
ALT Graphic announcing that NiemanLab reported Politico management violated AI adoption safeguards. Large text reads: “NewsGuild Journalists won their AI arbitration against POLITICO… but why does that matter?” Below is a red button stating “Let’s talk about it.” At the bottom are the logos for The NewsGuild and “News Not Slop.”
ALT Graphic explaining the significance of the AI arbitration ruling. Section heading reads: “The ruling marks one of the first major tests of an AI clause in a newsroom union contract.” Social media screenshots quote PEN Guild posts discussing Politico’s use of AI tools and emphasizing that AI isn’t held to human editorial standards. Large red box states that NewsGuild journalists fought for AI protections because robots are not subject to the same editorial rigor.
ALT Graphic stating that the Politico arbitration proves union contracts protect workers from unethical AI implementation. A large quote from the US Congressional Research Service notes that no broad federal AI regulatory framework exists. Text below explains that government hasn’t caught up to regulating AI, leaving workers vulnerable to cost-cutting by employers.
ALT Graphic with heading “This is a blueprint for workers everywhere.” Text explains that strong contract language on AI at Politico sets a model for all industries facing unregulated AI. Another line reads: “If workers can enforce AI protections here, we can enforce them anywhere.” Below is a photo of a woman holding a megaphone at a labor rally, and a “News Not Slop” block inviting viewers to sign a petition.

BREAKING: A man who threw a sandwich at a federal agent during Trump’s law enforcement surge in Washington, D.C., is found not guilty of assault. apnews.com/article/sandwich-…
New analysis from CBO of the "Big Beautiful Bill" shows the bottom 20% get poorer, not much change for most of America, & the top 10% get meaningfully richer - and that's before tariffs
It was the largest transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich in a single law in history
WE FIXED IT: Obviously our successful rally had an effect on @NYDailyNews management, who felt compelled to “write” an op-ed. Unfortunately it’s full of mischaracterizations and missing key facts. As journalists we couldn’t let that slide, so we got out our red pens…
Last week, a Circuit Court ordered @PittsburghPG to restore the health care it illegally took away years ago. It's a great sign we’re going to get everything this strike has fought for. Clearly, the Blocks need you to break this down for them.
Will you? tinyurl.com/DearBCI
BREAKING: Today the 3rd Circuit Court enjoined the @PittsburghPG, ordering the company to — upon request — immediately restore the health care it illegally took away in 2020, and bargain with us.
This is an enormous win and the most consequential day of our entire strike.
