Today, I delivered a statement at the discussion on “The Future of Multilateralism: Building the UN Development System for the Post-2030 Era.” As we look beyond 2030, we must ensure that the United Nations Development System remains fit for purpose not only for the remainder of the #2030Agenda, but for the challenges and opportunities that lie beyond it. The future of the United Nations cannot be designed by institutions alone. It must be shaped through stronger partnership and solidarity. The engagement of civil society, youth, academia, local authorities, the private sector and other stakeholders will be essential if we are to build a development system that remains relevant and effective in the decades ahead. The choices we make today will help shape a multilateral system that can deliver for future generations. #SDGs #GlobalGoals

Pleased to meet H.E. Mr. Sirojiddin Muhriddin, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, in Dushanbe. I reaffirmed ECOSOC’s commitment to supporting dialogue, coordination and follow-up across the UN system on sustainable development issues, including water, climate resilience and disaster risk reduction. We discussed sustaining international momentum following the UN 2023 Water Conference and preparations for the 2026 UN Water Conference, as well as advancing #SDG6 through multilateral cooperation and integrated approaches across the #2030Agenda, including at the upcoming #HLPF2026. I also welcomed Tajikistan’s leadership on glaciers and cryosphere-related issues.

At the Panel on “Unlocking Private Capital at Scale” during the High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development” 2018–2028 in Dushanbe, I stressed that the challenge is not the absence of financing tools, but the absence of scale. Despite global financial assets in the hundreds of trillions of dollars, the world still faces a $7 trillion water infrastructure investment gap. We must unlock private capital, strengthen public-private cooperation, expand blended finance and risk-sharing instruments, and invest in resilient water infrastructure for LLDCs. As I noted, “The capital exists. But it is not flowing to water systems at the scale or urgency required.” #SDG6 #GlobalGoals #SDGs

At the Forum on “Ensuring Resilient Food Systems in the Era of Global Water Bankruptcy” in Dushanbe, I stressed the need for innovative, accessible solutions to transform irrigation, groundwater governance and land use management while working with - not against - water systems. Around 3 billion people and more than half of global food production are in regions where water storage is declining or unstable, while #SDG6 remains seriously off track. We must strengthen groundwater governance, scale up sustainable irrigation and resilient agriculture, and ensure science, technology and financing reach the communities that need them most. #GlobalGoals #SDGs

At the 4th High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development” 2018-2028 in Dushanbe, I stressed that this is a critical moment in the global water agenda. As a follow-up to the 2023 UN Water Conference and a key step toward the 2026 UN Water Conference, we must strengthen coherence across water, climate, biodiversity and sustainable development processes to accelerate #SDG6 and the #2030Agenda. I reaffirmed ECOSOC’s commitment to integrated approaches that place water at the centre of sustainable development, including through the review of SDG 6 at #HLPF2026.

I am pleased to convene today as President of @UNECOSOC, the Special Meeting on “Safeguarding energy and supply flows: Supporting global development through international cooperation.” Disruptions in energy and supply flows are affecting industries, markets and the daily lives of people everywhere. This is not only an energy challenge, it is a development challenge, a financing challenge, and a test of our collective ability to deliver on the promise of the #2030Agenda. Today, we must strengthen development cooperation across countries, institutions and sectors, protect the most vulnerable, preserve resilient trade and supply networks, and accelerate investments in sustainable energy systems to support a more secure, equitable and sustainable future for all. #GlobalGoals #SDGs 🔗bit.ly/4uNpXod

I delivered today an opening statement at the 21st session of the United Nations Forum on Forests, emphasizing that forests are home to most of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity, and they remain among our most effective natural allies in addressing climate change. In my remarks, I highlighted how sustainably managed forests support livelihoods, protect watersheds, preserve biodiversity, strengthen climate resilience, and contribute directly to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Drawing from Nepal’s own experience with community forest management, I stressed that “when forests thrive, communities prosper, biodiversity rebounds, and the climate breathes easier.” At a time of growing climate and development challenges, we must strengthen implementation, align policies and investments, and support countries most vulnerable to deforestation and climate impacts. As I noted, “sustainable forest management is not only an environmental agenda - it is a development imperative, a climate necessity, and a moral responsibility.” 🔗 bit.ly/48PuBd4 #UNFF21 #UNForests #GlobalForestsGoals #ClimateAction

The #STIForum concluded with a strong call for inclusive, accessible and action-oriented innovation to accelerate progress towards the #SDGs, while ensuring that the benefits of science, technology and innovation are shared more equitably and reach those who need them most. It emphasized the importance of addressing the constraints that limit scale, and the critical role of partnerships in delivering solutions on the ground. In my closing remarks, I underscored the need to bridge every digital, innovation, and capacity divide and ensure that no one - no community, no country, no young person, girls and women - is left behind. #STI #Tech4SDGs #GlobalGoals 🔗 bit.ly/4uyYk2b
