When building a road, a hospital, or a school, we must ask not only how green it is, but whether it can withstand future climate shocks. @UNOPS_Chief spoke with @EFEnoticias on #LATAM's unique potential to lead the green & blue economies. But sustainability alone isn't enough. Resilient infrastructure is essential to protecting communities & unlocking opportunities in the face of future climate shocks.

Seeing first-hand how @UNOPS work changes lives and delivers tangible impact for the communities we serve is the most rewarding part of my job. Here in Tegucigalpa #Honduras, I visited Hospital Escuela, one of the main public hospitals. UNOPS is helping to improve primary and emergency healthcare services, in partnership with the Ministry of Health. Our work includes enhancing key infrastructure at the facility, and procuring equipment, with a strong focus on sustainability. Inspiring to meet partners and our UNOPS team to learn how such initiatives bring at scale healthcare to patients.

With global crises deepening and development financing declining, the multilateral system is being tested. At today’s Executive Board, I outlined how @UNOPS supports partners and communities with practical solutions – to address needs and drive impact. In one year alone, through our agile, demand-driven model, we delivered 1,100 projects worth $2.7 billion, across 130 countries. 5 highlights 👇 1️⃣ Managed vital aid delivery mechanisms in complex settings like Gaza and Yemen 2️⃣ Built resilient infrastructure and expanded access to essential public services in places like Ukraine, Haiti and the DRC 3️⃣ Created 26 million days of paid work for local communities –> 10 million for women 4️⃣ Delivered 2/3 of our work in complex and fragile situations to support vulnerable communities 5️⃣ Supported multilateral partnerships to drive progress in health, climate action, sustainable development Looking ahead, as we push for a more impactful 🇺🇳 through #UN80 reforms, UNOPS remains committed to scaling up implementation capacity to help turn global ambitions into tangible results for the people we serve. This is a moment of truth. Multilateral cooperation is being questioned. The SDGs are off track. The climate goals are slipping. And developing countries are facing a $4.2 trillion yearly gap to finance the 2030 Agenda. So, how can we work together to drive greater impact, at scale, to address immense needs? How can we better align policy, finance and implementation?  The assessment of the pros/cons of a potential merger between @UNOPS & @UNDP to create a new UN agency on sustainable development is a key consideration under the #UN80 reform agenda. There are risks, but there are also immense opportunities. I outlined UNOPS vision for the path ahead on the creation of this new entity, and the alternative options before us - including the launch of a joint venture on energy transition - to scale up implementation where it's needed most.   I thank the Executive Board President and Member States for their guidance and strong words of support for UNOPS work in these crucial discussions.

I believe that to confront the growing challenges of our time, we need new ways of working that will drive efficiency, effectiveness and coherence across the UN system. That could include boosting collaboration through an agile, marketplace approach, while safeguarding mandates. UNOPS works so that our collective impact matches the scale and urgency of today’s global challenges. Productive discussions on #UN80 reforms today with DSG @AminaJMohammed, Member States and my fellow Heads of Agencies at the Joint Meeting of the Executive Boards of @UNDP / @UNFPA / @UNOPS, @UNICEF, @UN_Women and @WFP 📖 My statement: bit.ly/4vnmtZO

Climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss – the triple global crisis during one of the most challenging times in history 🌡️☢️🐝 From the shores of Lake Tanganyika Basin in Africa, to the fertile agricultural lands of northwest Haiti, @UNOPS provides practical solutions to support communities and help protect nature for the next generation. This #WorldEnvironmentDay, I join the call to act #NowForClimate, and reaffirm UNOPS commitment to helping shape a more sustainable future. bit.ly/4vxsbJ1

I’m very pleased to present @UNOPS 2025 Annual Report. Amid profound global challenges, it’s the result of our collective efforts to deliver for communities in need around the world. The report lays bare what UNOPS does best: Getting things done with practical solutions. Together with other UN organizations and our partners, UNOPS made a tangible impact in 2025, with much of our work supporting people in highly complex environments like Afghanistan, Gaza, Haiti, Myanmar, Sudan, Ukraine, and Yemen. 💊 We delivered vital medical supplies 👷‍♀️ Created paid work opportunities and boosted local economic development 🏫 Built climate-resilient roads, hospitals and schools for children 🫂 Supported shattered communities to rebuild and come together At a time when multilateral cooperation is under serious strain, this report speaks to the value of UNOPS agile, efficient, demand-driven approach, and its contribution towards critical humanitarian response, sustainable development, and peace and security efforts. But together, there is so much more to do. To improve lives, respond to immense needs, and help shape a more peaceful, fairer and greener world for all. Read the report 👇 bit.ly/4e2skgh

The crisis in the Strait of Hormuz continues to disrupt the global supply of fertilizers, threatening agricultural production, trade and food security, in many parts of the world. People in countries highly dependent on fertilizer imports from the Middle East, like many across Latin America and the Caribbean, have been feeling the impact. I had a productive exchange with the Group of Latin America and Caribbean Countries members on a potential UN Mechanism to facilitate the transit of fertilizers and related raw materials through the Strait of Hormuz.

How can the @UN deliver better, faster and more efficiently at country level? I joined the #ECOSOC OAS to present on the reconfiguration of UN Country Teams (UNCT) – critical work I’ve been facilitating under the SG’s #UN80 reform agenda. We’ve explored 3 key areas: 1️⃣ Strategic and streamlined planning to support national development priorities. 2️⃣ No one size fits all. Adapting according to context. 3️⃣ Form follows function. Expertise can be deployed in different ways. Great discussion with Member States and UN Resident Coordinators on the need for ambitious reform to make the UN fit for the people we serve at country level.

Yet another wake up call on the urgent need for bold #ClimateAction. The looming El Niño will very likely drive more extreme weather, exacerbating climate impacts already being felt by communities and economies around the world. We must accelerate the shift to sustainable energy solutions, and protect impacted communities through effective adaptation and mitigation measures, including climate-resilient infrastructure.
🆕 WMO confirms: El Niño conditions are developing and are set to influence global temperature and rainfall patterns around the world in the months ahead. Most forecast models suggest it will be at least moderate – possibly strong. Be prepared. More info➡️ bit.ly/4e1hvLt
