The University of Nairobi, Faculty of Science & Technology has received diagnostic kits worth KES 3 million from Prognosis Biotech Kenya Ltd to strengthen food safety research, laboratory training, and innovation in contaminant detection. The Faculty received 73 pieces of Symmetric M1000 aflatoxin test strips, one Quantum B T 120tests kit, a Digital incubator, and a 3PR MINI unit which will serves as a catalyst for high-impact science. The donation was presented by UoN alumnus Mr. Boaz Ndisio (Class of 2013), now Country Representative for Prognosis Biotech Kenya Ltd, under an active Memorandum of Understanding with the University. The diagnostic tools will support hands-on laboratory training, enhance research on mycotoxins and aflatoxins, and strengthen the University’s contribution to public health and food safety solutions in the region. Prof. Josiah O. Aduda the newly appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor Finance, Planning & Development brings over 25 years of experience in academic leadership, governance, and institutional development. He has previously served in key leadership roles including Dean of the School of Business and Chair of the Department of Finance and Accounting, contributing significantly to academic growth and administrative excellence. Prof. Aduda is widely respected for his expertise in financial management, research supervision, and strategic planning, having supervised numerous PhD and Master’s students and published extensively in his field. In his new role, he is expected to strengthen financial sustainability, enhance resource mobilization, and support the University’s long-term development and transformation agenda.

#HappeningNow The University of Nairobi is hosting the Advancing Public Health Research in Eastern Africa through Data Science Training (APHREA-DST) Workshop under the theme “Promoting Data Science and Artificial Intelligence for Health” at PrideInn Azure Hotel, Nairobi. The three-day regional workshop has brought together researchers, universities, health institutions, policymakers, students, and global partners from Kenya, Ethiopia, and the United States to advance collaboration in public health data science and AI-driven health solutions. The workshop is led through a partnership between the University of Nairobi, Addis Ababa University, and Columbia University, with support from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). Speaking during the opening session, University of Nairobi Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Innovation & Enterprise) Prof. Leonidah Kerubo noted that the initiative aligns with the University’s strategic priorities of strengthening digitization, advancing research excellence, fostering innovation, and deepening international collaboration. The workshop will explore emerging applications of artificial intelligence, machine learning, epidemiological modelling, health informatics, digital health systems, and ethical considerations in AI for health across Africa. Celebrating the life of Prof Raphael Munavu @uonbi
The University of Nairobi mourns the passing of Professor Raphael Munavu, EBS, Professor Emeritus, Department of Chemistry, University of Nairobi, and former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration and Finance), University of Nairobi (1994–1998). On behalf of the University, the Vice Chancellor, extends heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and the wider academic community. Prof. Munavu served the University with distinction as Dean of the Faculty of Science (1987–1990) (formerly College of Biological & Physical Sciences) and was instrumental in establishing the International Programs Office in 1995, strengthening the University’s global engagement. He also served as Vice-Chancellor of Moi University (1998–2002), contributing significantly to the growth of higher education in Kenya. His distinguished career in scholarship, leadership, and public service leaves a lasting legacy at the University of Nairobi and the nation. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
