"Another very useful post from journalism professor Damian Radcliffe as part of his work examining the background to the local news crisis in the United States and what can be done about it. Here he’s looking at a number of the structural dynamics impacting local news provision including the closure of titles, job losses, issues of diversity and inclusion, as well as news and information deficits." via @mediavoicespod voices.media/monday-30th-oct… With a link to @sojcagora medium.com/commonplace-forum…

This week, the SOJC welcomes @DannyParker99 to campus as part of the Hearst Demystifying Media series! Learn more below ⬇️
This week we are hosting @DannyParker99 on campus @uoregon, as part of the Hearst Demystifying Media series run by @UOsojc. Danny is a PhD Candidate at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication @UWMadison. Her research examines the role communication ecologies play in the reproduction of poverty and the development of political identity. An ethnographer, she chronicles the lived experiences of extremely impoverished rural and urban communities by living among them and documenting their everyday lives. A major facet of her research grapples with how structural conditions, from carceral state economics to news coverage of poverty-related issues, threaten equal access to democratic institutions and belief in democracy for poor communities. Danny has a professional background in international education and taught English as a second language for seven years before pursuing her Ph.D. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in applied linguistics from Georgia State University and her master’s degree in journalism and mass communication from the University of Georgia. Her work has won awards from @icahdq and @AEJMC and has been published in @AEJMC_MCS. Her article on "The Politics of Resistance: An Ethnographic Examination of Political Alienation and Radical Disengagement among Rural White Underclass Men" (tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.…) is a good intro to her research.
