LIVE from the Senate Ag Hearing: @SecRollins on the New World Screwworm fight. A year and a half ago: just 10 APHIS employees working full-time on this threat. Today: over 120. That’s a 1,000% increase in just 14 months. We’re prioritizing the big threats and scaling up fast to protect American agriculture.

screwworm.gov is the central public resource for tracking and understanding the New World screwworm response. It’s where @USDA and our partners post confirmed cases as they’re verified, share surveillance updates, and keep the Screwworm Playbook in the hands of responders in the field. The point is simple: everyone is working off the same real-time, science-based information, so decisions on the ground stay aligned and misinformation doesn’t fill the gaps. Visit now: Screwworm.gov

🚨 With the recent detection of New World screwworm in a 3-week-old bovine in Zavala County, TX, USDA urges residents to contact your veterinarian right away if you see any suspicious wounds, maggots, or infestations in your animals or herd. If you see signs of maggot infestations in live or very recently dead wild animals, especially in areas near the U.S./Mexico border, please call 866-4USDA-WS (866-487-3297) to report it to your local USDA Wildlife Services office. A case of NWS may have been detected in South Texas. The sample is now at USDA's National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) in Ames, lowa for confirmatory testing. We will provide updates the moment results are available. We have already activated personnel on the ground and are working with local partners. What you can expect from us is transparency, candor, and most important — action. screwworm.gov

As part of USDA’s efforts to keep New World screwworm (NWS) out of the United States, @USDA_APHIS Wildlife Services is leading a coordinated effort to inspect wildlife for signs of NWS infestation. To date, they’ve inspected more than 18,000 wild animals (102 different species) in 187 U.S. counties. They’ve also distributed more than 900 NWS sampling kits to field staff and partner agencies to increase the reach of these critical surveillance efforts.

We're grateful for our partnership with @OIGUSDA and appreciate you taking the time to visit with us and see our state-of-the-art facility in person. Looking forward to future interactions! @USDA_ARS @USDA_APHIS
Great visit with leadership at the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) in Manhattan, Kansas. Special thanks to our USDA OIG auditors for their work on a series of reports and recommendations on USDA’s stand-up of the only large animal bio-safety level 4 facility in the U.S. When fully operational, NBAF will allow crucial research on microbes and biological agents rated as “dangerous” to protect the public against animal diseases that are transboundary, emerging, or zoonotic. Thanks to NBAF leadership for its cooperation with OIG to evaluate progress and challenges. Amazing to hear from USDA’s terrific scientists leading on bio agro-defense innovation! Check back soon for our next NBAF report usdaoig.oversight.gov/report… – Inspector General John Walk.
