ALT A GIF shows the recent climate-niche distribution of the Gila monster is in the southwest U.S. and northern Mexico—which are shaded in grey on a map of western North America. In the future—the years 2070-2100—the grey area expands northward farther into California, Nevada, Wyoming, and as far north as southern Washington and Idaho. Parts of the species’ climate-niche in northern Mexico could be lost as the climate warms.
