Ukraine is known for retrospectively “claiming” major historical figures through geography, language, or birthplace - however far-fetched those connections may be.
In a recent interview to Tucker Carlson, Iuliia Mendel did this with Sergei Korolev, saying that a Ukrainian sent the first man to space. Korolev was indeed born in Zhytomyr, which is part of modern Ukraine now, but that’s hardly the reason Yuri Gagarin orbited the Earth.
The same debates surround Ivan Franko. Celebrated in Ukraine as a foundational national figure, he described himself as Russian in his own writings and fought to make Galicia part of the Russian Empire - incidentally, two of his sons continued his fight during Soviet times.
