Ben Griffin spends $50k a week while traveling on the PGA Tour. Housing, trainers, flights, coaches, special meals… Is Ben Griffin better than Ben Hogan and Lee Trevino, guys who drove themselves and stayed in Holiday Inns?

The Mainstream Golf Media are not adept financial forecasters, and that’s okay. I’m here to help. To answer Eamon’s hypothetical: businesses can change their business plans. For example, if they are running tight on cash, they can slow investment in certain growth areas to focus on their core competency. This can shift timelines to profitability, but it doesn’t mean the business is failing. Burning less cash while protecting your core product is called good management, which is something they didn’t need to be as thoughtful about when they had a bottomless sovereign wealth fund at their disposal.
Yasir Al-Rumayyan might wonder how this squares with LIV's CEO saying as recently as February that profitability is 5-10 years away.

With everyone sharing their Aaron Rai stories, I figured I’d share mine as well: A few years back, I saw Aaron at a grocery store in Los Angeles. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off.

Right or wrong, the real reason many golf fans feel uninterested in an Aaron Rai major is that it lacks a narrative arc. It’s like seeing a stranger’s marriage proposal in the park. I’m happy for them, but beyond the possibility of it going terribly wrong, I’m not really interested. Like watching the last 10 minutes of a movie without having seen the first hour and a half.
Alright, I’m not a fan of Rai’s aesthetic either. But what is up with golf being the sport where performance doesn’t matter, only names do. No other fanbase in sports hates underdogs more than this current crop of golf “fans.” No other fanbase is as quick to wrongly jump on the “This does nothing for x sport” train either. If that back 9 didn’t get you interested, I highly recommend you stop wasting your time trying to be a golf fan, because you’re not a golf fan. Rai played an amazing tournament, and closed it off with a flawless back 9. No one else came close to doing that. If you were a golf fan you’d realize watching an underdog close it out without breaking a sweat on the back 9 is awesome, aesthetics be damned.
