Australia and Turkey will face off tonight in Vancouver’s first FIFA World Cup match at B.C. Place. With game-day road closures in effect around BC Place and large crowds expected downtown, we encourage fans and visitors to take transit whenever possible. Fan marches will also be taking place downtown this evening, with the first beginning at 4:30 p.m. and the last around 6 p.m. These events are expected to draw thousands of supporters and may cause additional congestion in the downtown core. Please plan ahead and allow extra travel time. #FIFAWorldCup2026Vancouver

This past Sunday, Out On Patrol was proud to attend the screening of The Fruit Machine at Trout Lake Community Centre as part of Pride Month. The documentary shines a light on the LGBT Purge, a painful chapter in Canadian history when thousands of 2SLGBTQ members of the RCMP, military, and public service faced discrimination, surveillance, and career-ending consequences simply for being who they were. We were especially honoured that our Board Member, @vpddiversity Detective Constable Kat Dauncey, moderated the post-screening discussion featuring LGBT Purge survivors Martine Roy, Diane Pitre, and Wayne Davis. Their stories, courage, and resilience left a lasting impact on everyone in attendance. Thank you to Trout Lake Community Centre for hosting this important event, Elder Sempulyan for the land acknowledgement, Out in Harmony for the beautiful musical performance, and all of the community members and organizations who came together to learn, reflect, and remember. As we celebrate Pride, it’s important that we also acknowledge the struggles and sacrifices of those who came before us. Their experiences remind us why inclusion, dignity, and equality matter, and why there is still work to do.

How fun does this look? VPD officers participated in a Musqueam Youth Night. An amazing evening bringing youth and police officers together through games, conversation and connection with the help of this mobile arcade experience. Beyond the fun, they had important discussions around online safety and creating positive relationships in the community. Special thanks to the Vancouver Police Foundation for supporting this event and making it all possible.

Today, we remember the passengers of the Komagata Maru and reflect on a painful chapter in Canadian history. In 1914, 376 passengers seeking opportunity and a better life arrived in Vancouver Harbour, only to be denied entry because of discriminatory immigration policies. Forced to remain aboard the ship for two months under difficult conditions, they were ultimately turned away. The boat returned to India and many of the passengers were imprisoned or killed. The incident remains a powerful reminder of the harm caused by prejudice and discrimination, and the importance of building communities grounded in respect and equal treatment for all.

On this Int'l Day Against homophobia, Transphobia, & Biphobia, we remember that 2SLGBTQ people continue to face prejudice, hostility, and violence; and are denied legal protections, essential health care, and civil and human rights.

It is a privilege to know you and work alongside you, Eddy! So grateful to witness all the wonderful work you do in the community. Congratulations!! You absolutely deserve it! 🎉😁
Beyond words to receive the 2026 Jim & Vicki Chu Community Safety Leader Award from the @VancouverPD. I feel incredibly privileged to work, in different ways, with the VPD, Correctional Service Canada, the Justice Institute of BC, and the City of Vancouver — all organizations that play vital roles in public safety. Being welcomed into these spaces gives me and my colleagues valuable insight into the challenges facing our communities, and opportunities to bring different people together to explore how we can make those communities stronger, safer, and more socially connected. It's a genuine honour to do this work, and I am deeply grateful to everyone who has shared in it alongside me. A special shout-out to my CSC Citizen Advisory Committee colleagues Shira W. and Judy Reiman, and to my fellow VPD SOGD Committee members Robert (Jules) Hadley, Jutta Kohli, and Staff Sgt. Chad McRae for joining me yesterday. Many thanks as well to the VPD Board, especially member @lorrainelowe_ , for encouragement and support. Congratulations also to Arezo @ZarrabianCOV, Senior Crime Analyst extraordinaire, who received a Chief Constable’s Commendation in recognition of her exceptional skill and leadership in crime analysis. Arezo has visited our SOGD Committee before and members found her to be a wealth of knowledge. Thanks to Chief Constable Rai @VPDChiefRai for always leaving his door open for us, and to Senior DCC Howard Chow for consistently making time to listen whenever I had a concern. Thank you as well to DCCs Alison Laurin and Andrew Chan, Inspector Michelle Torvik, Minister @terryyungyvr, and Councillors @LisaDominato @LennyNanZhou, and @MikeKlassen for their warm greetings. And thank you to Chris Birkett and the great folks at @OutOnPatrol for always making me and our SOGD Committee members feel so welcome, and for their work in combatting bullying and supporting 2SLGBTQ youth interested in public safety careers. Much gratitude to Detective Constable Kat Dauncey and Taylor Keen @VPDDiversity for believing in me and nominating me for this award. And finally, a big thanks to Sergeant Adam Donaldson and Cst. Megan Lui for doing such a wonderful job MC’ing, and to Susanna Lim and her entire team for organizing such a meaningful and well-attended event. Lastly, thank you to the many citizens, volunteers, and public safety professionals who work quietly every day to look out for others. So much important work happens behind the scenes, often without recognition or remuneration, and our communities are stronger, safer, and more connected because of it. Congratulations to you all.
