HUGE congrats to @VanessaHum_ . She successfully defended her MSc thesis today @SFUBioSci . She gave a truly inspiring presentation showing how she has integrated art into her science.
Celebrating achievements in the Centre for Wildlife Ecology!
Vanessa Hum won a prize for the Best Speed Talk at the North American Congress for Conservation Biology (NACCB) at the end of June in Vancouver.

Had a great time at #NACCB, making new connections and presenting my speed talk on merging art and science! Thrilled to have won Best Speed Talk! 🎉 @SCBNorthAmerica
Big week for my team at #NACCB2024@Society4ConBio meeting. @livw555 @TrianaHohn @ChuJonathan@VanessaHum_ all gave exceptional presentations by sharing the stories of their research. Extra congrats to Johnathan Chu and Vanessa Hum for receiving presentation awards!
Want to do a PhD studying birds and urban ecology?
My research team is recruiting a PhD student studying non-breeding ecology and movement of birds in Metro Vancouver, BC, Canada.
Based @SFU@SFUBioSci and collaboration with @ECCCSciTech @ECCCWildlifeSci
Hey creative scientists!!! 🎨 Check out the new book “Let’s Get Creative: Art for a Healthy Planet” by Jessica Rose that highlights how art can be used to better our environment. (P.S. You may find me on page 60 😉).

A beautiful weekend in Bamfield, BC at @pacific_eec where I shared my Masters Thesis work on bird-window collisions. Looking forward to help implement future bird-friendly solutions at @BamfieldMSC and elsewhere 👀🐦🪟 @SFUResearch@SFU_Science@SFUBioSci
Couldn’t ask for a better weekend to spend in Bamfield for @pacific_eec! Thank you to the organizers for a great weekend and for allowing us to share our work. @BamfieldMSC@SFU_Science@SFUBioSci
Window collisions are a huge threat to birds living in and passing through urban areas. His death and billions of others could have been prevented. Please take action to protect birds by treating your windows (flap.org/stop-birds-from-hit…)
We are saddened to report that Flaco, the Eurasian eagle owl discovered missing from @centralparkzoo after his exhibit was vandalized just over a year ago, is dead after an apparent collision with a building on West 89th Street in Manhattan. bit.ly/3I9o3b8
Attended the EcoEvo Retreat this past weekend in Squamish, BC. A beautiful conference location and lots of interesting talks. And, I was runner up for best poster!
Since @FLAPcanada and I first asked the Ford Conservatives to mandate bird safe windows, 2 million birds have died from window collisions in Ontario. Birds play an essential role in our economy and environment. Sign the petition here: chrisglovermpp.ca/protect_mi…#onpoli
Turning out the lights isn't even close to what they need to do (treat their windows) but it's a start. If you don't have a US address use the one for McCormick Place 2301 S King Dr, Chicago, IL 60616, United States
We are less than 300 signatures away from reaching our goal of 10,000. Please share! We will present the signatures to the MPEA at their October 30 meeting. We are asking McCormick Place to turn off its lights each and every night of migration. works.audubon.org/petition/m…
Some days it’s hard to be a #bird conservation scientist. Or just a person who cares about nature. This should be a criminal offence. Well, fun fact, it actually is (👋 invisible MBTA), but never enforced.
Thank goodness for grassroots movements like @BirdMonitors
Did you know there’s a fish that can sing? Learn more about the plainfin midshipman and my lab mate’s (@annalinton_’s) masters research project at @SFUBioSci.
Interested in studying Williamson's Sapsuckers, with fieldwork in British Columbia? @Emily_S_Choy and I are looking for a PhD student to be based at McMaster University.
Want a project with direct conservation applications, then this project is for you.
App due 7 Sept 2023
ALT Drs. Elizabeth Gow and Emily Choy are seeking a PhD student to join their research teams at the McMaster University, and Environment and Climate Change Canada beginning January 2024.
We are a supportive research group that fosters an equitable and inclusive environment for all members to have equal opportunities to grow, develop, and succeed. We strongly encourage applications from members of traditionally under-represented groups.
Due 7 Sept 2023. See https://www.elizabethgow.com to view ad.
Birds can see through glass, and what is reflected on glass, but they cannot see glass itself. Reflections on windows pose a massive threat to birds that collide while trying to reach the reflected image. Keep birds safe by creating a visual barrier!
