Right now, 15 of the 30 teams are spending less on player salaries than that proposed $171.2M number, yet they agreed that it would be the salary floor in their first proposal So, I guess those owners have more money to spend? Interesting, funny, very interesting
BREAKING: As expected, MLB proposed a hard salary cap to union officials today as part of the next CBA, sources tell ESPN. The salary floor for teams beginning in 2027 would be set at $171.2 million which includes player benefits with the ceiling at $245.3 million.

There was nothing preventing MLB from voiding the Dodgers' shady contract with Ohtani, in which they deferred an average of $68M per year of his $70M salary. MLB could have nixed that; they just didn't want to, because they wanted Ohtani in the second-largest media market.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred called the sport’s payroll disparity “not a fair fight” for small-market teams ahead of expected salary cap talks with the union. A labor battle is expected, with the union having been vehemently opposed to a cap for decades. MORE: ow.ly/WhAb50Z56Wx
