This is often obscured in the talk about @Spotify. Look to @SIRIUSXM and their ~60% gross margin compared with Spotify’s ~25%. It’s tough to generate a healthy margin with just music given how concentrated the content is amongst a few labels, but podcasts are different.
Spotify's acquisitions of Gimlet, Anchor, & Parcast are as much about margin expansion as they are product engagement. With podcasts, Spotify can generate demand & capture the value of that demand creation (like Netflix). Can't do that with music given labels extract that value.

The old car companies think what separates them from Tesla is that Teslas are electric. But they're also separated by the fact that Teslas are software, and that, they will discover, is an unbridgeable gulf.

We're seeing an explosion of enterprise software successes because markets are often 10X larger when they move from legacy to the cloud: global scale instantly, billions of potential users, exponential growth in devices, completely new work styles. This is just the start.

“The greatest area of creativity right now is in podcasting,” @ZackRW tells #RAINsummit. The aim of Google Podcasts is double worldwide podcast listening and vastly improve search and discoverability.

Here’s a scenario I’ve seen play out more times than I can count. Young band/act get some real buzz going around what they are doing. A fancy booking agent steps in and says “now’s your time! Let’s make this happen!” So the band stops booking themselves or leaves...

It would be cool for curators to have some sense of context within the zeitgeist when this sort of thing happens, no?
Biggest mystery in Japan right now is how a 1994 song from Dinosaur Jr (Over Your Shoulder) topped the Billboard Overseas charts last week, beating out the likes of Ariana Grande and Queen. It also also topped the video charts with over 8 million views on YouTube.
This is one of several reasons why we build in on-board, pre-processing EQ and audio normalization- relative to the other elements in your audio database.

Netflix auto-playing previews for every single show is one of the most pronounced user-hating experiences online in a while. I get that it helps juice the audience count, but it turns browsing into a game of hot potato.

1/ Why is Spotify looking to buy Gimlet? Three reasons: (1) Differentiate through unique content, (2) Earn better margin with non-music content, (3) Capture the ad dollars moving off radio, DOUBLE the size of the music market in the US. I'll break this down below (thread 👇):

FX Networks Chief John Landgraf says Netflix ratings data is "not a remotely accurate representation." Netflix "is not telling you the whole story." "You" averages 8 million viewers an episode, not 40 million, says Landgraf. That's good number, but not 40 million, he adds.

There are very few decent sized podcast M&A comps. But here's one: In 2015 Scripps paid $50mm earnout for podcast distributor Midroll sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/…
