This has been a total disaster for the grassroots music community. Songwriters getting less PRS money, less exposure. Fewer new fans. Less kudos. Less affirmation. Less confidence. It can be the difference between recording a second album or not. It's cultural vandalism.
The reality since the new schedule began is stark. From 1 January to 1 May culturalvandalism.info records that @BBCRadioScot, plays by Scottish independent artists are down 23%, emerging/grassroots Scottish artists down 56% and female-led emerging/grassroots artists down 55%.

78 years ago, 800,000 Palestinians were expelled from their homes. Britain made it possible. Today, Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. Britain made it possible. 78 years of the Nakba - and 78 years of British complicity in crimes against the Palestinian people.

States committing genocide must not be welcome at Eurovision. Russia and Belarus were rightly excluded after the invasion of Ukraine. But the atrocities inflicted against Palestinians are ignored. Licence fee payers shouldn’t have to fund Israel's pinkwashing propaganda.

The cull of anything remotely popular or culturally significant on BBC Radio Scotland continues. This week, while in Cambridge presenting a talk at Anglia Ruskin University about the very subject, Nicola Meighan, Len Pennie and Michelle McManus were axed.

Announcing our official Record Store Legend, @RobertPlant 🏆 This accolade recognises Robert Plant’s lasting impact on music around the world, as well as his ongoing dedication to supporting both new artists and record shops. Robert Plant has been a familiar face in record shops worldwide, and they have remained central to his musical life, cementing his status as a true Record Store Legend. Speaking at Spillers, Robert Plant said: Record stores have always been a part of my life. For me, once you get to the physical record it’s because you really want to know and be a part of what the artist was considering. And I know, as a guy who’s been making records since 1966, people want to take home something very special, to enjoy all the elements of what an artist has put together. We want a connection between the music and the art of the whole thing. Robert Plant chose @spillersrecords in Cardiff, the oldest record shop in the world, to receive home his plaque, immortalising Robert Plant's connection to not only this record shop, but the country that has inspired his songwriting. The installation highlights @RobertPlant's ongoing support for record stores as cultural hubs which champion music and community, inviting fans to visit a record shop to share in their own love of music. 🔗bit.ly/4swyLO0

Very sad to see Elvis Shakespeare closing down. There should be more shops that do both books and records, not fewer. Last day March 29. Half price books and CDs until then.

Our first win! Please share. @BBCRadioScot backtracked after @TheSMIA open letter. They appear to be realising how catastrophic for Scottish music their Senior leadership’s decisions have been. More change is possible.

75.3% of the 243 professional Scottish artists that signed the Open Letter to @BBCScotland said that @BBCRadioScot late-night shows gave them their first radio play. Axing that pipeline is removing the opportunity for young Scottish musicians to be heard. youtu.be/hOFP0-PG44g?si=8LyD…
