The whole "DC is a swamp" meme is overstated, as most of the city is well above sea level. But Southwest DC is, in fact, a swamp; hence why it was developed so late and became parks, and why we shouldn't be so fussy about the reflecting pool developing algae.

Pardon my ignorance as a Brit but I thought I was getting robbed by the waitress after they took my card behind their till at a restaurant. Turns out this is just what they do and then they make you sign the bill after. Apparently this is normal but I’ve never seen it anywhere
