The 1987 Bathurst 1000 was a defining, albeit controversial, moment in Peter Brockโs legendary career, marking his record-breaking ninth and final victory at the event.ย
Brock, along with co-drivers Peter McLeod and David Parsons, officially won the race, though they did not cross the finish line in first place.
The race was provisionally won by the Ford-supported Eggenberger Motorsport team (drivers Steve Soper and Pierre Dieudonnรฉ). However, following a lengthy legal battle over illegal front wheel arch modifications, the two leading Ford Sierras were disqualified. On March 15, 1988, more than five months after the race, the victory was officially awarded to the HDT Racing Holden VL Commodore.ย
Brockโs primary car (#05) suffered an engine failure on lap 34. He and David Parsons then took over the team's second entry (#10), which had been driven by Peter McLeod. This second car was famously referred to by the team as the "Starting Price Special"โa "lashed together" machine containing the worn-out parts left over from the main car.
This was a turbulent time for Brock. He had recently split from General Motors-Holden (GM-H) due to his insistence on fitting the controversial "Energy Polariser" to his signature road cars. This made sourcing parts and preparation incredibly difficult, with Brock describing the build-up as one of the most extraordinary and challenging weekends of his career.ย
Though the victory was "messy" and marred by legal and political wrangling, it solidified the "King of the Mountain" legend, proving Brockโs ability to persevere despite severe adversity and equipment limitations.
