Researchers of cyclic di-nucleotide signaling, biofilms, phage and phage defense, and use of bacterial signaling molecules to manipulate the immune system.
Compiling all of my grant applications from 10 years as faculty. During this time, I have had 64 unfunded applications! Truth is most of us could wallpaper our offices with rejections. The MOST important key to be successful in science is to don't let "NO" stop you!
So proud of my daughter Bella! She is a jr journalism student @UnivOfKansas and her @KansanNews school article on a homeless encampment in @lawrenceks was picked up by @KansasCityStar -the biggest paper in Kansas City!
Next up in our MGI Micro Biography series is Jasper Gomez, a doctoral student in Chris Waters' lab.

ALT Jasper Gomez smiles at the camera. He is wearing the most incredible shirt. It's coral-colored with purple octopuses all over it. He is standing in front of colorful plants.
Beautiful story @Aathmaja and very happy to work with Jeremy and @FreddolinoLab on this (with @GeoffreySeverin, @macyEpell, and Meng Hsieh co-authors from my group and Rebecca Hurto from Lyida's team). So important to not just consider biofilm formation, but also dispersal!
Check out my latest work from @WatersLabMSU lab with our amazing collaborators Jeremy Schroeder @FreddolinoLab on how V. cholerae maintains its cyclic di-GMP levels to maintain the balance between motile and sessile forms. (1/3)

Great article! We were very fortunate to have Amber in the lab as a BS/MS student and then super lab manager, and I am excited for her in her now role as the new Academic Program Coordinator at MGI where she will be able to help all the grad students of the dept!
Next up in our @MSUMGI Micro Biography series is Amber Bedore. Amber is the Academic Program Coordinator and also an MGI alumna. She earned her BS / MS in our department and was a research tech and lab manager in the @WatersLabMSU !

Congratulations to @Jas_B_Gomez on his new work in @biorxivpreprint describing a new Type IV restriction system in V. cholerae which is embedded in the middle of a Type I restriction operon. This system targets glucosylated 5 hydrox methyl cytosines 1/
biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…
Thus there is a really cool ping-pong evolutionary interaction of phage evolving resistance and subsequent sensitivity to different Type IV systems: 3/
@MBlokesch and her student Grazia Vizzarro independently discovered this system, and it has been great working together to concurrently submit our two papers! Here is their BioRxiv. Congrats to Jasper Gomez @Jas_B_Gomez and Grazia!

Thrilled to share our latest preprint featuring our PhD student Grazia @Vizzarro_Grazia as first author 🥳
Thanks to senior scientist, David W. Adams, for co-supervising the work & to Alexandre Lemopoulos for the bioinformatics support.
