IQ is a useful measure of cognitive capacity. My buddy’s 160 IQ kid is way better at pattern recognition and problem solving than my
very smart non-geniuses.
Academics tend to be very smart, and spend most of their time with smart people. You calibrate to your local average.
This is what makes me doubt the idea of “IQ” as a meaningful construct. I work in elite academia and honestly don’t see a lot of variation in raw intellectual horsepower, either among academics or in comparing academics to non-academics. 1/
