Triple-digit heat is likely for parts of California and the Southwest late this weekend into next week, with highs potentially reaching 110 degrees F in the Desert Southwest, and 100 to 105 degrees F in southern sections of the Central Valley of CA.
The Risk of Extreme Heat, valid for the period of May 12-18, 2026, and the 6 to 10 day temperature outlook, valid for the period May 10-14, 2026, both from the Climate Prediction Center. A Moderate Risk of Extreme Heat is indicated over parts of the Desert Southwest, including Phoenix AZ. High temperatures may reach 110 degrees Fahrenheit for these areas May 11-12. A Moderate Risk of Extreme Heat is also indicated over the southern reaches of the Central Valley of California, including Fresno and Bakersfield, where high temperatures of 100 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit are possible. A broader Slight Risk of Extreme Heat covers the remainder of the Central Valley of California and Southwestern deserts, including Las Vegas NV, for high temperatures reaching well into the 90’s. Most of the slight and moderate risk areas have a greater than 70 percent chance of above-normal temperatures during May 10-14.

❄ California's snowpack is at 10–20%, a new record low. That number matters more than most people realize. Think of snowpack as a slow-release water source. As temperatures rise, melting snow keeps plants and grasses hydrated longer, holding off the dry conditions that wildfires thrive on. When the snowpack is low, that moisture disappears faster. Vegetation dries out weeks earlier than normal, and the drier the grass and brush, the easier it ignites, and the faster fire moves through it. This year, an unusually dry and warm end to winter accelerated that process, leaving the vegetation with moisture levels far below what is typical for this time of year.
