I read Balaji's The Network State cover to cover when it came out, but I’ve always thought there’s a massive contradiction at the center. He presents network states as an answer to a fragmented, multipolar world. But actually, network states only really work in some semblance of a rules-based system. Network states and special economic zones work best when things are stable enough to let people experiment at the edges of sovereignty without constantly being pulled back into the realities of geopolitics.
