It's a long time coming, folks, but a NEW EPISODE is finally out. Please forgive the lengthy absence. My spring has been busy with extended hospital stays for my kid and wrapping up another school year, but I may be back for the long haul once again. This is EPISODE 210: "Many Wept For Joy" and this episode sees, at long last, the arrival of the crusaders before the mighty walls of Jerusalem. open.spotify.com/episode/3ex…

I’m breaking from my rule of sticking to medieval or European legacy posts, because I’m loving this World Cup so far. I’ve played and coached and ref’d soccer, and nothing but soccer, since I was five…there is not a more BEAUTIFUL GAME than soccer. And it’s taken a long time, but America is here for it! I fear our star may have burned itself too bright too fast last night, but that was the best game I’d seen the fellas play since the glory days of Donovan-Dempsey-Howard. Enjoying the ride!
Boomers and Europeans will try to tell you this country doesn’t care about football. DON’T LISTEN 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Ep211 OUT NOW! This is the culmination of 3.5 years of crusade, from the fertile hills of France to the parched landscape of Jerusalem, upwards of 100,000 Westerners have been reduced to 20,000 or so, and they're on the literal doorstep of their ultimate goal. Here is the long-awaited Siege of Jerusalem, 1099. open.spotify.com/episode/0j0…

“The Destructors” by Graham Greene. Without question, this one stacks up against most great novels. I must’ve read it a hundred times.

NEW episode published! SEASON 8: The First Crusade EPISODE 208: A Crusade Divided Antioch had fallen—and with it, unity. Bohemond of Taranto claimed the city as his prize, but the greater question lingered: who, if anyone, could command the Crusade itself? Raymond of Toulouse would test that claim, pressing southward with visions not merely of victory, but of purpose. Yet between Antioch and Jerusalem lay more than distance—it was a road darkened by hunger, ambition, and fracture. At Ma'arrat al-Numan, desperation reached its most harrowing depths, as starvation drove crusaders to acts that would haunt the memory of Christendom. What began as a holy expedition now strained under the weight of human weakness, competing loyalties, and the terrible cost of survival. The path to Jerusalem remained—but the Crusade itself stood divided. open.spotify.com/episode/1pv…

I'd like to apologize for the long wait between episodes. Some personal issues, including an 11-day hospital stay for my son, kicked off a hectic couple months, and I just couldn't get back in the saddle again easily. But the show is back! I'm releasing TWO episodes today, closing out the Siege of Antioch, so I hope you share the show (and this post) to let everyone know about this amazing chapter in our medieval story. (See thread for links to episodes.)

Episode 207: Antioch & the Gate of Heaven As Antioch grinds its besiegers down to the bone, whispers of salvation begin to circulate—quiet plans, private bargains, and a single gate that might open from the inside. Bohemond and Tancred step out of the mud and into the realm of cunning, where redemption is no longer earned by endurance but by nerve, secrecy, and timing. This episode follows the moment when suffering gives way to revelation, and the road out of hell begins not with a miracle, but with a choice. open.spotify.com/episode/71L…
