Nice little thread here!
Cash flow. Not a phrase you hear with freelance editors. Yet it’s vital to staying afloat and not having to take a staff job again. Here’s a quick breakdown 🧵

💯 These are all tactics, and tactics are only valuable when they serve your larger objectives.
You can have a successful freelance career without: • Launching a course • Starting a podcast • Sending a newsletter • Posting to social media regularly Friendly reminder that there are plenty of freelancers doin' the dang thing quietly—you just don't hear about it. 😊

I'd say my favorite thing about having a home-based business is that my printer is either "almost out of ink" or "completely out of ink," always

A guy once contacted me *years* after I spoke at a lunch-n-learn, looking to engage my services. The long game is about steadily planting seeds, with the knowledge that you can't control how quickly they sprout.
In consulting, it's the long game that matters. Case in point: About 13 mos ago, someone needing a B2B PR consultant working w/ industrial clients found me on LI. We had a good conversation. We kept in touch. We're getting ready to kick off their PR efforts. 13 months later.

Great little list here! For Jenni's #1, I have a standing appointment with myself to ruthlessly cut expenses every 90 days. What's important is that you stay on top of expenses, because in a world of MRR, they just keep going up...
🧵If you need to make more money in your #freelance business-of-one, consider these three strategies: 1️⃣Reduce expenses where you can. Do you track your business expenses? If not, it’s time to start!

I've helped hire 50 freelancers over the past 10 years. If you're considering hiring freelancers, here are 3 reasons you should. 1. You get to tap into specialized talent, someone who has done exactly what you're looking for before, multiple times. 2. It's an easy way to complement the existing skillset of your team without having to overhire internally. 3. They bring a fresh perspective and can leverage experience from their other clients to push your business forward faster. Need help hiring freelancers? Let's chat.

What (not) to do when a potential customer won’t disclose their budget? First of all, avoid drafting a proposal without sufficient information, says Matthew Fenton (@WinningSolo), who offers some valuable recommendations in the article. winningsolo.com/prospect-won…

Gotta boost this tweet from @bradleebartlett. Choosing your clients well is perhaps the most important key to long-term success in this biz. And you should never sell your integrity for any price.
Let me be the one to tell you today: It's okay to say no to projects that don't align with your values or goals. Stay true to your vision for your business, who you are, and what you want to be known for. No amount of money is worth your integrity or peace of mind.

Lately, I've been thinking about how nice it is to work with people I can trust to: _Hit deadlines _Own their areas _Deliver great work _Maintain discretion _Contribute positively _Not go off the deep end If you work with people like that, let them know they're appreciated.

Apart from the BS subject line, note the PPS. Friends, as @PRisUs always preaches, if you have to pay for the placement, it’s a hard pass.

Friendly freelance reminder: You can be objectively awesome at what you do. But if you're unpleasant to work with, you won't get hired twice. The work matters. But it's not the only thing that matters.

Friendly freelance reminder: Marketing's not inherently evil (though some of its practitioners are). Approach it generously, considerately and consistently, and you're not one of the bad guys.

Fun Monday exercise: Reach out to a favorite client, past or present. Let them know why you loved working with them. Be specific. If you try it, let me know how it goes.
