We just published this great essay at
@AsimovPress. I think it persuasively argues that biologists should think of mitochondria as actual, living organisms (and not just as the "powerhouse" of the cell.)
This is my favorite passage:
Most biologists believe that mitochondria are merely cellular organelles, similar to the Golgi apparatus or endoplasmic reticulum.
But a swelling tide of scientific evidence suggests otherwise: mitochondria are not just organelles, but their own life forms.
