๐Ÿ›๏ธโš–๏ธ For a thousand years, the British people governed themselves without the state. This is how they did it. A thousand years ago in England, there were no police. There were no prisons. There was no central state strong enough to reach every village. And yet, somehow, England worked. The reason was something the Anglo-Saxons had built into the foundations of their society. They called it frankpledge. Every man in every village belonged to a group of ten. They were called a tithing. โš–๏ธ And each man, by law, was responsible for the conduct of every other man in his tithing. If one man committed a crime, his nine neighbours were responsible for bringing him to justice. If they failed, they paid the fine themselves. The whole tithing answered for the crime of one man. ๐Ÿ“œ The system was given the force of law by King Canute, the Anglo-Danish king who united England in peace. Between 1016 and 1035, Canute decreed that every man over the age of 12 must belong to a tithing. When the Normans came in 1066, they could have abolished it. They did the opposite. William the Conqueror kept the Anglo-Saxon system. And he made it stronger. โš”๏ธ Twice every year, the Sheriff would arrive in the village. He would call the tithings together. He would check that every man was accounted for. This was called the View of Frankpledge. The system held England together for 300 years. And when the king's courts eventually grew to replace it, two pieces of frankpledge stayed behind. ๐Ÿ”ฅ The first became the jury. Twelve neighbours, called to judge another. The same idea, transplanted from the village to the courtroom. The second became the constable. The man chosen from among neighbours to keep the peace. Not imposed from above. Chosen from below. Modern British policing began here. The jury system began here. The principle that ordinary British people are responsible for ordinary British people began in an Anglo-Saxon village a thousand years ago. โœ๏ธ For a thousand years, we have been responsible for each other. We do not need the state to teach us how to belong. โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ” This channel has no ads. No sponsors. No state funding. It is built the same way the tithing was built. By the people who choose to stand in it. Be part of us ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‘‰ proudofus.co.uk/support ๐Ÿ‘ˆ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง Be Proud Of Us. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง

The Only Dog Ever Officially Enlisted in the Royal Navy. In 1939, a Great Dane named Nuisance had a problem. He loved riding the trains between Simon's Town and Cape Town, South Africa, escorting drunk sailors back to base. The state railway company didn't love him back, they threatened to have him put down unless someone paid his fares. The Royal Navy's solution was breathtaking in its bureaucratic elegance: they enlisted him. On August 25, 1939, Able Seaman Just Nuisance, surname Nuisance, first name Just, trade listed as "Bonecrusher," religion as "Scrounger", became the only dog in history officially enrolled in the Royal Navy. As enlisted personnel, he was entitled to free rail travel. Problem solved. His service record reads like a sitcom. He was charged with sleeping in the Petty Officers' dormitory and sentenced to "deprivation of bones for seven days." He went AWOL repeatedly, refused to leave pubs at closing time, lost his collar, and, in his most serious infractions, killed the mascots of two Royal Navy warships, HMS Shropshire and HMS Redoubt. He never once went to sea. He died on April 1, 1944, his seventh birthday, after being put to sleep due to a paralytic condition called thrombosis. The Royal Navy buried him with full military honours, a firing party, a bugler sounding the Last Post, and a Union Jack draped over his grave on the slopes above Simon's Town. His bronze statue still watches over the harbour today. They gave a dog a rank, a salary, and a disciplinary record just to get him a free train ticket. Peak military logic.

Iโ€™m sure we have all now seen the footage of Metropolitan rozzers kicking a suspected terrorist in the head, repeatedly, when he was down. We can all play a part in putting an end to this sort of police brutality. Mainly by not going around stabbing people.

The patron saint of Ireland was British. ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ชโ˜˜๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง Born in Roman Britain. Around 385 AD. His father was a decurion, a Roman local official. At 16, Irish raiders kidnapped him. Along with thousands of others. He was enslaved for six years. A shepherd. Alone on the hills of Ireland. He escaped. Found a ship. Made it home to Britain. Then around 432 AD, he went back. Voluntarily. To the land that enslaved him. Not for revenge. He spent the rest of his life there. Building churches. Teaching. Baptising. Forgiving. He never came home. His own words survive. The Confessio. One of the oldest personal documents in European history. Written by a British man in Ireland, fifteen hundred years ago. "I am a sinner. A simple country person." "I never had any reason to return. Except the Gospel and its promises." Happy St Patrick's Day. ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡งโ˜˜๏ธ Be Proud Of Us.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง Twelve million people were taken from Africa. Chained below deck. Sold like cargo. The world watched. Nobody came. Then one country sent its navy. Not to conquer. Not to colonise. To free them. Two ships sailed out against three thousand miles of ocean. They hunted slave ships through the dark. Boarded them at sea. Broke the chains below deck. And carried the freed to a city called Freetown. When slavers saw the navy coming, they threw their captives overboard. Shackled together. Still alive. British sailors jumped in after them. Disease killed a quarter of the squadron in a single year. And still more came. Not because they were ordered to. Because they volunteered. When nations refused to stop, Britain sailed into their ports. For sixty years, they never left. A hundred and fifty thousand people walked free. Because one country decided it would pay any price to end it. These stories deserve to be told. Help us tell them. Be Proud Of Us. ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง Be part of us ๐Ÿ‘‡ Sources, support and more at proudofus.co.uk
