I wouldn't discount the significance of both sides framing this as the "end of the war." Yes, the US and Iran will remain hostile toward one another. There won't be true peace. But it will be very difficult for either to willfully return to active, intense hostilities for some time after the MOU is signed. This is especially true of Trump, imo.

“The Iranians commit to destroying and removing the enriched material, but how do you do that? Is going to take a little bit of time to figure it out,” the official said. “This is very combustible stuff, very volatile stuff. We’re not just going to, like, go down there with a backhoe & a guy with a backpack & start taking it out.”
The MOU being negotiated between the US & Iran states that, if signed, it would trigger a 60-day period for "technical" negotiations to take place, a senior Trump administration official said Friday While the MOU outlines a series of topline commitments that Iran must agree to — including the dismantling of Iran's nuclear program, reopening the Strait of Hormuz & the US destroying Iran's enriched material — the highly technical talks will focus on how to specifically implement and carry out the deal

Exclusive: Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Gen. Caine, made a secret, rushed visit to US Central Command headquarters in Florida late last month to be briefed in person on plans for the military to send ground troops into Iran to forcibly seize its highly enriched uranium, sources tell @NatashaBertrand & me. Trump hit pause after being warned it would likely prompt severe Iranian retaliation, extending the war and plunging the global economy into further turmoil, the sources said. But the high-level and pressing nature of the briefings underscores how close the Trump administration came to greenlighting the high-risk ground operation, sources said. cnn.com/2026/06/12/politics/…

CENTCOM posted a whole infographic earlier today saying this too … does not make it true. (Trump, himself, said during same press avail a MOU w/ Iran would, first and foremost, reopen the strait.) In reality neither Trump nor the U.S. military really ‘decides’ if the strait is fully open or closed at this point — even though the U.S. Navy has helped some ships transit in recent weeks. The shipping industry, ultimately, decides.

Trump: The strait has been open for months and you didn’t know about it. Reporters weren’t able to get it.

It is worth - given the many false starts and reversals - waiting to see the fine print, or any print at all.

Trump also described the same Memorandum of Understanding as “a little conceptual” ..
President Trump said Iran has agreed to a "detailed" Memorandum of Understanding and they won't have any nuclear weapons. He said the promise of a deal is different now because Iran has "taken a pounding" and "we told them exactly what we were going to do" should they not agree.

“I want to read this document.” Republican Sen. John Kennedy to @kasie about a memorandum of understanding between the U.S & Iran. I wager there are a lot of people across the political spectrum who feel similarly.

President Trump says Vice President JD Vance will potentially be at an agreement signing with Iran as soon as this weekend: "The strait (of Hormuz) will officially open as soon as we sign, which could be soon -- very soon, maybe over the weekend in Europe. I won’t be able to be there, but JD will be there."
