Are you a plant variety protection professional? Now there's an international credential to match your expertise. Private sector professionals working in plant variety protection can now earn internationally recognized credentials through a new certification program launched by the @International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV). 🔗upov.int/en/w/news/2026/upov…

ARIPO, in collaboration with the Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho @LesothoPR through the Registrar General’s Office, the Ministry of Law and Constitutional Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition, is hosting the Symposium on the Protection of New Varieties of Plants from 20–21 May 2026 in Maseru, Lesotho. Held under the theme “Nurturing Agricultural Innovation: Advancing the Protection of New Plant Varieties for Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture in Africa,” the Symposium seeks to raise awareness on the role of #PlantVarietyProtection (PVP) in supporting agricultural development across the ARIPO Region and beyond. The event brings together policymakers, legal and IP experts, plant breeders, seed companies, farmers and other key stakeholders to discuss the ratification and implementation of the Arusha Protocol, its alignment with national laws, and its relationship with the UPOV Convention. It also provides a platform for sharing experiences and developing practical recommendations to strengthen PVP systems in Africa. @UPOVint #ArushaProtocol #FoodSecurity #SustainableAgriculture

It was my pleasure to address participants this morning at the opening of the Symposium on Plant Variety Protection (PVP) in Maseru, Lesotho, under the theme: “Nurturing Agricultural Innovation: Advancing the Protection of New Plant Varieties for Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture in Africa.” As @_ARIPO marks its 50th anniversary this year, the Symposium reflects our continued commitment to strengthening innovation ecosystems that support agriculture, food security, climate resilience, and sustainable development across Africa. PVP is not merely a legal framework; it is a strategic policy tool for promoting innovation, attracting investment, and transforming agriculture through research and improved plant breeding. Through the Arusha Protocol, ARIPO continues to support Member States in building an enabling environment for agricultural innovation and the protection of new plant varieties. My appreciation to the Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho for hosting this important Symposium, and to Hon. Selibe Mochoboroane, Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition, for gracing the opening ceremony.
