NEW: David Neuberger tells the Guardian that the status quo is failing “the fundamental aims of the law – to respect people’s right of personal autonomy, and to protect the vulnerable”. It's time for change.

Very exciting to see over 400 people involved in medical aid in dying at the conference in Portland Oregon. Such kind and compassionate people

I'm reading compelling The Day I Die by @AnitaHannig. Tenderly & straightforwardly written it captures lived experience of dying & #MAID in the US. Little details like what do you do when with a group of family at a loved one's end (do you bring sandwiches?) really bring it home

The Oregon-based law that we campaign for is very prescriptive. It would only be available to dying people. The number who actually use it is very small, and have remained so in Oregon. Your fears are unfounded

It's a cost saving measure. They see people with poor health as an inconvenience. They'd rather kill us off than invest in medical treatment or pay disability benefits. #AssistedDying

Over 60% of members do not want the BMA to oppose assisted dying, hence a neutral position was adopted in 2021. To reverse this would be to force a minority view on the majority; is the UK to go down the Roe v Wade route? @BMA @BMA_JuniorDocs @BMA_Academics @BMAScotland @BMA_GP

Maybe the church leaders should come and see my loving 93 year old mother with cancer for 2 years and has now infected her spine. Paralysed from waist down. She has asked to go to sleep. Why won’t you support this. Do you like people to suffer?

Jan's simple statement of facts about how assisted dying would improve her life stands in sharp contrast to the lies and confusion about the matter that are spread by opponents of law change. Well said, and thank you for using your time and energy to support law change for others
“For me, having this choice would be like an insurance policy against suffering” Read Jan Butterworth and her daughter Sarah’s powerful testimony on why an assisted dying law must be introduced into the UK. 👇 👇 👇

The case for #assistedsuicide (let us call it what it is) rests upon emotion rather than on facts or deeper understanding of the issues invloved. It is inherently exploitative of understandable but misplaced fears about the end of life.
