Please read this … ideally five or six times until it sinks in.
The Royal Society for Blind Children and the National Deaf Children's Society have both come out against the Starmer social media ban. "Internet bad" is a trendy, upper-middle-class opinion for people with extracurricular budgets that ignores legions of people who rely on it.

My 14 year old son is teaching himself to play guitar by using tutorials on YouTube. Can the @DCMS explain to him how he can carry on using these videos on his smartphone? He’s very annoyed. Typical sledgehammer to crack a nut approach as usual!

People read books by candlelight before we had electricity in our homes. It’s called progress.

Given that Confessions II comes out the day before London Pride, what do we think are the chances of her popping up in London for a performance? (Also cries in no longer living in London 😭)

watch this be detrimental for queer kids in exclusive societies where they can't be open regularly so no shit they flock online with like minded people who actually accept them

Interestingly they didn’t bother using it when a bunch of racists turned up harassing people

“Giving children their childhood back?” So reopening the 2,000 youth clubs closed under neoliberalism? The 1,000 children’s centres? Recreating the 10,000 playing fields lost? Or the 800 playgrounds lost in the last 10 years? The 1,000 libraries? The after-school clubs closed?
We are banning social media access for under 16s. These days kids must find their feet in a world where technology intrudes into every area of their life. I just can’t let that go on anymore. So we’re giving children their childhoods back.
Community note
The UK Government's 'careful review' of the research found a small correlation between children's use of social media and wellbeing, but no evidence of a causal effect: gov.uk/government/pub… assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/696e0b46…

As an example in Glasgow there is currently a dispersal zone where officers have the power to tell anyone with just one more person to leave the area. Social media not allowed. Hanging out outside not allowed. Third spaces non-existent. Awful to be young in this country
The people smugly gloating that young people will just have to 'find something else to do' in response to the social media bans are usually the exact same people who seethe with anger and make reports about 'loitering' whenever they have to share public spaces with teenagers.

Sorry. But if you opposed a digital ID. But think this under 16 ban is a good idea you have been had 😂. How do you guys not realise this IS the digital ID looool. They’re not going to identify kids. They’re going to confirm we are adults by digitally identifying us 😭

Starmer: We want to digitally ID everyone who uses social media Brits: Absolutely Not! Starmer: OK then, we want to ban under 16s from social media (by digitally ID-ing everyone) Brits: OMG that’s a great idea. Idk what idiot would be against that 🥴

Many of the arguments for the social media ban seem to boil down to “we survived back in the 70s without social media” - THAT DOESN’T MEAN WE SHOULD REVERT BACK TO THE 70s and expect kids to just use a pen and paper to stay in touch with each other Brenda ffs

🤷
Won’t be surprised if Starmer uses Esther Ghey at some point this week with the whole “social media killed my kid, not transphobia” message
