In today’s Newsday, it was reported that Republican operatives are sending attack mail to Democratic households across NY-01 to influence our June 23rd primary. And Congressman Nick LaLota admitted he knew about it. They’re not doing this because they’re confident. They’re doing it because they’re worried about what we’re building. LaLota is trying to pick his opponent. This campaign has raised over $423,000, earned nearly 7,000 petition signatures, and polled within 3 points of LaLota before we’ve even fully launched our general election effort. They know we can win and unite Long Island. This campaign isn’t about political games. It’s about making Long Island affordable again. Young people should be able to buy a home here, raise a family here, and build a future in the communities that raised them. One issue comes up everywhere I go: affordability. This clip is from my recent town hall on Shelter Island as I continue making my way across NY-01 to listen directly to the people I hope to represent in Congress. The affordability crisis on Long Island isn't just an economic issue. It's about our children, our families, and the future of our communities. Too many young people grow up here, go to school here, and want to build their lives here, only to find out they can't afford to stay. The median home price in Suffolk County is now around $800,000. I recently passed what looked like a modest two-bedroom home and thought it might be reasonably priced. It was listed for $1.5 million. How are young adults supposed to graduate, often carrying student debt, and afford to buy a home when prices have reached these levels? How are working families supposed to put down roots and raise the next generation here? Our children deserve the opportunity to build a future on Long Island, not be forced to leave the communities they grew up in because they can no longer afford them. That's why making Long Island more affordable will be one of my top priorities in Congress. I'll continue traveling throughout the district, hosting town halls, listening to residents, and fighting for solutions that lower costs and help keep families here.
