Small Ottawa teams building high merit tech while everyone ignores them has been the winning economic innovation strategy for Canada for the last 21 years

it's also not a coincidence that Ruby/Rails is overrepresented in successful 2010s tech relative relative to share of LOC (pre LLM era)
I think people are sleeping a bit on how much Ruby on Rails Claude Code is a *crazy unlock* - I mean Rails was designed for people who love syntactic sugar, and LLMs are sugar fiends.

One thing about Silicon Valley? People move on quickly. Facebook and Google’s earliest employees didn’t stay till IPO. In Ottawa, though, people stayed longer, creating a foundation for continuity. “When I hire someone here, the chances we’ll work together in five or even ten years are massive,” Tobi said. “In Silicon Valley, engineers stick around for an average of 18 months.” This meant Shopify could invest deeply in people, building a true learning organization.

Here's the Simple Modern DTC tech stack. Grown slowly and thoughtfully. These partners fuel our DTC growth. Shopify Development: @TheVaanGroup After 6 years of growing DTC with affordable Shopify developers, we needed a high caliber agency. Vaan was a perfect partner to rebuild our website for the next leg of the brand. Vaan combines performance and branding into one beautiful website. They rebuilt our website last year and now develop it. @x_armand 's team is excellent. Customer Support AI: @siena_ai Siena responds to 52% of our customer interactions while getting rated as well as human agents. Siena is industry leading and constantly getting better. We’re believers in the vision of @LisaPopovici and @andreinegrau. SMS: @Recartapp Recart increased our SMS subscriber rate by 290% over Klaviyo. SMS is now our 4th strongest DTC revenue driver. 25%-40% of traffic to our major events are now through SMS. Support from @somaatoth and team is fantastic. In-Store Product Locator: @StoreLocators StoreLocators is for omni-channel brands. It pulls exact inventory amounts by SKU for every physical retailer in your area. It’s branding, giving us legitimacy of selling in major retailers. After holiday shipping cutoffs we push customers in-store to buy gifts. Retailers appreciate it. Mail: @GetPostPilot Post Pilot is THE platform for Shopify mail campaigns. We get a 7 ROAS on mailers and can deliver to customers not on our e-mail lists. The mailers are a great brand impression. Awesome product @drewsanocki and @mepstein311 Mobile App: @Tapcart Push notifications and early access to product drops are the main app driver. Our highest LTV customers love the experience. Tapcart truly makes the app easy and affordable. Shoutout @mrsharma. Returns: @loop We’re currently onboarding. Their interface handles every type of return flow we need beautifully. They integrate into Gorgias and Siena AI. They launched a customer funded option that’s a great low cost introduction to returns automation. Landing Page Builder: @replohq Replo has changed the game in performance marketing for us. We now have full creative freedom, in a way that we never did with our traditional Shopify pages. Where we once were confined within prebuilt grids, we can now truly do whatever we want in order to best represent our products and our brand. Site Speed: @edgemeshinc Edgemesh has provided a significant boost in site speed. They cache our content every 15 minutes, significantly increasing page load times and helping convert new customers. 3PL: @encore3pl Encore has been our 3PL from day 1. They’ve scaled up with our business, which is incredibly impressive. They now handle significant volume, fulfilling to all the biggest retailers and drop shipping. We have immense gratitude for @kyle_benton and team. ERP: @NetSuite NetSuite was incredibly painful to integrate. We took steps back on our ability to sell because of it. However, being a large omni-channel business it had to be done. NetSuite is the foundation we need to operate at the scale we’ve achieved. Customer Support: @gorgiasio Gorgias isn’t the cheapest but for an eCommerce native brand but it is great. They Integrate with all of the platforms we use. We switched to Gorgias from Zendesk this year and it has been an improvement. Reviews: @GetOkendo Okendo is a high value review solution. They have every feature needed and are preferred partners with Vaan. Customer Metrics: @Lifetimelyio Lifetimely makes tracking LTVs easy. You can get enough answers through shopify where I’d wait on this app until the cost isn’t as material. E-mail: @Klaviyo Klaviyo is the standard for a reason. They have every feature we could want for e-mail marketing. We’ve grown e-mail to be one of our biggest DTC channels with Klaviyo. Most importantly... Of course, none of this would be possible without what @harleyf has built at @shopify. We are forever grateful to the platform they’re built.

We just launched StoreLocators on our website. Customers can now see Simple Modern products in-stock in stores nearby. Why I'm excited about it: • Week Before Christmas: When DTC can't guarantee shipping, we can help customers find gifts in-store. • Branding: Nationwide programs in Target, Whole Foods and Walmart bring legitimacy. • Data: Inventory scraping data by store location is useful. • Supporting Retailers: Our retail partners appreciate us pushing online customers in-store. Check it out! simplemodern.com/pages/find-…

My favorite boss ever @solmaz_sh taught it to me as The Sniff Test. I can't even begin to describe how much more impactful this made me over time
There’s an awesome skill you can hone over the years that I’d call “data instinct”. It’s the immediate intuition about whether a metric or measurement you’re looking at is accurate or not. It applies both to business and engineering.

I'll be joining the incubator myself as well, and building a whole other SAAS company alongside the other participants. If you want to build alongside me, make sure to apply in the next few weeks. :)
