"Impossible Engineering"
A trillion dollars built by a guy who genuinely believed in things people thought were science fiction. Believe in your weird idea.

These are just the few I could remember. Even if we stay within tech/startup founders alone, the list is almost endless. And if we go beyond founders, there are OAU alumni leading companies, banks, multinationals, entertainment, politics, and more. Also, even a small fraction building successful startups is impressive, especially in Nigeria where building a company is already VERY HARD. Most startups don’t even survive long enough to become part of this kind of conversation.

There’s something about schooling in OAU that makes you want to become a founder of something! I don’t know what it is exactly….Some parts of that school opens your head to crazy ideas😂 I don’t know if it’s the afforestation and scenery or the history and nostalgia the institution carries from a very glorious past Imagine ranking 4th in the list of start up CEOs from a university in Africa …..that number is for established companies captured….it’s probably much more than 36!

If you're in tech in Nigeria, exposure is very important. Nigeria is not the USA. You can't create something in your garage, and it goes global. You most speak out and defeat imposter syndrome.

Today, I learnt that Olugbenga Agboola, Flutterwave’s co-founder/CEO, studied Electrical Engineering at OAU. Nigeria has produced 5 tech unicorns: Moniepoint, Flutterwave, Interswitch, Andela and OPay. Founders of 2 of them are OAU alumni. That pattern is not random. When students hear about alumni who have built big things, or see their peers at Nacos Library or White House Oven cooking up products, something changes. It is the same pattern with UNILAG and big tech transitions. When students keep seeing seniors land global internships and top tech roles, ambition becomes normal. Sometimes, people don’t just need talent. They need proof that someone from their own environment has done it before.

Olugbenga Agboola of Flutterwave - OAU or Unilorin? No mention of it on his LinkedIn page. I read on his Wikipedia page now that he finished from OAU. I think I saw some years ago that he finished from Unilorin. Who knows which is correct?

People underestimate how much environment matters. OAU literally conditions you to hustle and aim for excellence. 24/7 electricity, fast internet through intecu, people constantly building and competing around you. Productivity becomes the norm. Not surprised many OAU alumni are behind some of Nigeria’s biggest companies.
Tosin (co-founder/CEO of Moniepoint) and I were same set in Ife (entered 2001). Razaq co-founder of Cowrywise a year our junior (2002). I finished in 2006 because I studied a 4-year course. Tosin and Razaq finished in 2007 because Tosin studied a 5 year course, Razaq 4. I didn't know Tosin in Ife. Razaq and I were close. Now, Tosin's company, Momiepoint, has just committed N1 billion to building an innovation hub in OAU. I can't wait for my own company, Jarus Homes, to also become big enough to be able to commit N1 billion into our alma mater alone. Well done, Tosin @Eniolorunda PS: I think OAU 2000 - 2010 guys really cooked. Apart from Moniepoint and Cowrywise, Jobberman, Seamless HR are other top tech companies founded by OAU guys of that era. Any other popular one?

Moniepoint is putting ₦3 billion into building Innovation Hubs at OAU, UNN and ABU where students can learn software engineering, AI, robotics, product design and entrepreneurship with direct industry support. A lot of conversations about Nigeria’s digital economy focus on startups and funding, but only a few talk about the real foundation which is the talent pipeline. The engineers, designers and builders coming out of our universities. Also important that this isn’t concentrated in Lagos. OAU, UNN and ABU gives regional spread and access across the country. Tosin Eniolorunda deserves credit for this. It’s easy to build a successful company, scale and move on, but investing back into the institutions to produce the next generation of talents is the type of leadership and long-term impact that our society needs. Well done to the team at Moniepoint for investing in the Moniepoint Innovation Hubs 👏🏽.
