New: Morgan McSweeney is back advising the Prime Minister – four months after he resigned over his role in the Mandelson scandal.
The former No 10 chief of staff is advising Sir Keir Starmer in his moment of greatest peril, multiple government and Whitehall sources told The i Paper.
McSweeney is helping the Prime Minister and has “never really gone away”, one minister said.
“He has been on the end of the phone 24/7,” one source said. “He has been wargaming a leadership contest and believes Keir still has a chance if there are three or more [challengers] in the contest. He has been working out how the votes could go. It’s mad.”

Over 50 PEA Employees Denied Spousal Healthcare Benefits Despite Marriage Equality Law: MP
More than 50 employees of the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) who have legally registered same-sex marriages remain unable to access spousal healthcare benefits despite the marriage equality law being in force for more than a year, Democrat Party MP Radklao Inthawong Suwankiri said on Wednesday.
Speaking in parliament, Radklao said she had received complaints from affected employees who are still being denied basic welfare rights available to married couples. She said the law took effect on Jan. 23, 2025, and citizens should not have to wait for bureaucratic delays or outdated regulations to receive their legal entitlements.
Radklao called on the Finance Ministry and Labour Ministry to explain why welfare regulations for civil servants, state enterprise employees and workers have not been updated to comply with the law. She also urged the government to investigate state agencies and state-owned enterprises to ensure marriage equality is fully implemented in practice.

NHSO Defends Transgender Hormone Benefit, Says Critics Must Present Scientific Evidence
The National Health Security Office (NHSO) defended the inclusion of hormone therapy for transgender people under the universal healthcare scheme, saying the benefit had passed all required reviews, including medical, economic and budget assessments.
Deputy Secretary-General Dr Attaporn Limpanyalert said criticism linking the program to delays in vaccine access was misplaced, as some vaccines have already been approved and are still undergoing price negotiations.
He said the NHSO does not decide benefits on its own, with all proposals subject to public consultation, expert review and approval by the National Health Security Board.
The hormone therapy program has an annual budget of about 145 million baht. Dr Attaporn said the policy could be reviewed if new scientific evidence emerges, but any challenge should be based on academic evidence rather than personal opinions.

The National Health Security Office (NHSO) has defended its decision to include hormone therapy for transgender people under the country's Universal Coverage Scheme, saying the policy underwent extensive review and approval processes.
NHSO Deputy Secretary-General Dr Atthaporn Limpanyalert said the measure was assessed by multiple committees, including reviews of medical evidence, cost-effectiveness, budget impact and public benefit before receiving final approval.
Responding to criticism that some vaccines remain unavailable while hormone therapy is being funded, he said the issues are unrelated, noting that certain vaccines have already been approved but are still undergoing price negotiations.
He added that any future review of the policy would need to be based on new scientific evidence, not personal opinions. The programme is expected to cost about 145 million baht annually.
